Wilmington Level 2 EV Charger Installation and Surge Protection
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a turnkey Level 2 EV charger installation with whole-home surge protection for homeowner Julie Domlon in Wilmington, NC. The project was completed on May 2, 2025 by our technician Francisco Martinez.
Our team handled permitting, a new dedicated circuit, safe routing of conductors and conduit, and final commissioning to deliver fast, reliable home charging backed by strong protection against power surges.
Project Highlights
- Permit pulled: We filed the electrical permit and coordinated the work in compliance with local code requirements.
- Level 2 EV charger installation: Customer-supplied unit professionally mounted and commissioned for daily charging convenience.
- Dedicated 240V circuit: New 60A breaker installed to support Level 2 charging with proper labeling and clear workspace at the panel.
- Professional wiring: Approximately 75 feet of 6/3 NM-B cable routed cleanly, with 1-inch PVC conduit and fittings where surface protection was required.
- Panel optimization: Two 20A tandem breakers added where appropriate to maintain safe capacity and organization.
- Whole-home surge protection: A service-panel surge protective device installed to help guard appliances, electronics, and the home’s electrical system from damaging voltage spikes.

Whole-Home Surge Protection With $10k/3-Year Coverage
We installed a panel-mounted surge protective device designed to divert excess voltage safely to ground during events such as lightning-induced surges, utility fluctuations, or large equipment cycling. This helps reduce the risk of damage and premature wear to electronics and appliances throughout the home.
The installed SPD includes a manufacturer-backed $10,000, 3-year warranty for covered equipment in the unlikely event of device failure. All claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy and direct lightning strikes are excluded. “Covered Equipment” includes items such as the washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, indoor HVAC unit, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, breakers, and other hardwired devices (for example, built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting) when protected by a properly connected BoltShield SPD. Security systems and medical equipment are not included.
By installing surge protection at the main panel, routine transient surges are mitigated, helping extend the lifespan of sensitive devices and adding a critical layer of home resilience.
