Project overview: Whole-house surge protector installation in Charlotte, NC
On July 3, 2024, our Charlotte branch based in Matthews completed a comprehensive safety and reliability upgrade for Laura Nelson’s home in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Ben Lively, this project focused on whole-home surge protection, ground-fault protection, weatherproof outdoor outlets, and clean, code-conscious wiring improvements.
This service falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades expertise with a strong focus on Whole-House Surge Protection for better protection against power surges and everyday wear on appliances and electronics.
Scope of work completed
- Whole-house surge protector: Installed at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground and help shield connected appliances and sensitive electronics from spikes caused by lightning, utility fluctuations, or equipment cycling. The unit installed includes a $10,000 appliance warranty for three years in the unlikely event of protector failure.
- 15A GFCI breaker: Added a 15-amp GFCI breaker to provide ground-fault protection where required, enhancing safety for circuits that serve areas such as kitchens, exteriors, basements, crawl spaces, and garage lighting (not receptacles).
- New wiring: Ran approximately 25 feet of 14/2 NM-B Romex for 15-amp lighting and general-purpose outlet circuits, including junction boxes as needed for a neat, accessible installation.
- Protective conduit: Installed about 15 feet of 1/2-inch PVC conduit with proper mounting, fittings, and LBs for added mechanical protection and clean routing where exposed runs were needed.
- Outdoor bubble covers: Upgraded two weatherproof receptacle covers that protect outlets whether plugs are in use or not—important for year-round outdoor reliability in Charlotte’s changing weather.
Together, these upgrades improve surge defense, reduce nuisance trips and shock risks, and provide durable, weather-ready power access around the home.
Why surge protection is smart for Charlotte homes
Charlotte homeowners can experience voltage spikes from storms, utility grid fluctuations, or large appliances switching on and off. A whole-house surge protector works like a safety net for your electrical system: installed at the main panel, it detects excess voltage and redirects it to ground before it can damage wiring, electronics, or appliances. This helps extend the lifespan of devices and supports reliable performance across the home.
For this project, we installed a surge protector that includes a $10,000 warranty for home appliances over three years, adding peace of mind in addition to strong surge defense.
Safety-first wiring and outdoor power
Using 14/2 NM-B on 15-amp circuits ensures the right ampacity for lighting and general-purpose outlets. The GFCI breaker enhances protection against ground faults in moisture-prone or exterior areas. Weatherproof bubble covers keep outlets protected even when something is plugged in, and the PVC conduit adds a durable shield where conductors need extra physical protection. The result is a clean, code-focused installation that supports dependable power throughout the property.
