Whole‑Home Surge Protection and Grounding Upgrade in Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte branch, based out of Matthews, completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project for homeowner Jared Goldring in Charlotte, NC. On 2026-06-01, lead electrician Tyquan Johnson and a supporting wireman diagnosed system issues, installed a whole‑house surge protector with a $10,000 / 3‑year warranty, added new ground rods with a dedicated grounding electrode conductor, and filed the required electrical permit.

Professional Diagnostic Before the Upgrade

We began with a methodical diagnostic to inspect, test, and analyze the home’s electrical system. This step helps identify underlying issues, confirm panel capacity and wiring conditions, and verify bonding/grounding paths before any equipment is installed. Completing the diagnostic first ensures that the surge protection and grounding upgrades perform as intended and align with code and manufacturer requirements.

Whole‑House Surge Protector Installation

To protect the home’s electrical system and connected devices from damaging voltage spikes, we installed a service‑rated whole‑house surge protective device (SPD) at the main electrical panel. In the event of grid disturbances, lightning‑related surges, or equipment cycling, the SPD diverts excess voltage safely to ground, helping to safeguard sensitive electronics and extend the lifespan of appliances and home systems.

Warranty: The installed surge protector includes a $10,000.00 / 3‑year warranty against home appliances in the unlikely event of SPD failure. All claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy, and the warranty excludes direct lightning strikes.

Covered Equipment includes items such as:

  • Washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer
  • HVAC unit located inside the house
  • Trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove
  • Wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components (breakers, etc.)
  • Hard‑wired devices and appliances (e.g., built‑in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hard‑wired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting) when protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD

Not covered: Security systems and medical equipment are not included and are specifically excluded from Covered Equipment.

Ground Rods and #6 GEC for Reliable Earthing

Consistent, low‑impedance grounding is essential for surge protection to work correctly. We installed new ground rods and ran approximately 15 feet of #6 bare copper grounding electrode conductor (GEC) from the rods to the main service equipment. All connections were made with listed clamps and secured to meet best practices. This upgrade enhances fault clearing, stabilizes voltage during surges, and supports overall system safety.

Permitting and Compliance

Touchstone Electric filed the electrical permit with the county for this project. Please note: jurisdictions vary. The permit provided here is for the electrical scope only. If a project requires other permits (such as Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, separate Subcontractor, or Builder permits), those are not included. If additional non‑electrical permits are needed, we inform the homeowner of what is required and can provide pricing to process those items if requested.
