Our Charlotte team, operating out of our Matthews branch, completed a safety-focused upgrade for a homeowner in Indian Land, SC. On January 30, 2025, technician Gump Martin installed a whole-house surge protector at the main electrical panel, added a new 50A breaker, and provided a code-compliant hookup for a customer-supplied major appliance. Work was performed under an electrical permit filed with the county.
Scope of work completed
- Installed a 50-amp standard breaker in the main service panel to support a dedicated circuit suitable for equipment such as a range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, or EV charger.
- Installed a whole-house surge protective device (SPD) at the main panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground and help shield home circuits and connected equipment from damaging surges.
- Completed a major appliance hookup (customer-supplied), including the proper receptacle or hard-wired connection as needed.
- Filed the electrical permit with the county to ensure the project met local code requirements.
Why whole-house surge protection matters
Voltage spikes can originate from lightning in the area, power grid fluctuations, or the cycling of large appliances. - Claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy.
- Direct lightning strikes are excluded.
- Covered equipment includes: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, and a stove with a built-in microwave oven (when protected by a properly connected BoltShield SPD).
- Not covered: security systems and medical equipment.
Our team ensures correct placement and bonding of the SPD at the main panel so it can react quickly and effectively to divert excess voltage.
Code compliance and permitting in Indian Land, SC
