Whole-House Surge Protection Installation in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating out of our Matthews branch, completed a whole-home surge protection upgrade for Lantzen Lowe. On June 11, 2025, technician Danny Bishop installed a whole-house surge protector at the main electrical panel to help safeguard appliances, electronics, and the home’s electrical system from damaging voltage spikes.

Why Surge Protection Matters for Charlotte Homes

Power grid fluctuations, lightning activity, and everyday equipment cycling can all introduce sudden voltage spikes into your home. A properly installed whole-house surge protector diverts excess voltage safely to ground before it can reach sensitive devices. This helps reduce the risk of damage and can extend the lifespan of appliances and electronics that are otherwise stressed by repeated, smaller surges.

  • Installed at the main panel for comprehensive, whole-home coverage
  • Helps protect against surges from lightning, utility issues, and large appliances switching on/off
  • Supports longer service life for electronics, HVAC equipment, and other devices

Project Details

Service category: Panels & Service Upgrades | Specialty: Whole-House Surge Protection

Location: Charlotte, NC | Technician: Danny Bishop | Branch: Charlotte (Matthews)

Scope: Furnish and install a whole-house surge protection device (SPD) at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage to ground and help shield connected systems and equipment.

Warranty and Coverage Information

This installation included a manufacturer-backed $10,000, 3-year warranty in the unlikely case of SPD failure impacting covered home appliances. Key points provided with the installation:

  • All claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy.
  • Warranty excludes direct lightning strikes.
  • “Covered Equipment” includes: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components (breakers, etc.), and hard-wired appliances/devices (built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting) when protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD.
  • Security systems and medical equipment are not included and are specifically excluded from Covered Equipment.

Our team ensures the surge protector is installed correctly at the main panel and connected per specifications so the protective device can perform as intended for the home.

Our Installation Approach

For Lantzen Lowe’s home in Charlotte, we performed a thorough panel assessment, mounted the surge protection device at the main service equipment, and made the required connections with proper conductor routing and secure terminations. The system was tested and labeled for easy identification at the panel. As with every project, we prioritized a clean workspace and clear homeowner guidance on the new protection in place.

  • Assessment of the main panel and available breaker spaces
  • Mounting the SPD at the service equipment for whole-house coverage
  • Neat, code-conscious connections and verification testing
  • Final walkthrough to explain protection and next steps if surges occur
