Whole-House Surge Protection Installed at the Main Panel in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a whole-house surge protection installation for Ronald Smith in Charlotte, NC. On May 16, 2025, technician Viktor Opalko installed a panel-mounted surge protective device (SPD) to help shield the home’s electrical system, appliances, and sensitive electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
As a local contractor serving Charlotte from our Matthews branch, we help homeowners reduce the risk of costly damage from lightning-related events, power grid fluctuations, and everyday equipment cycling that can silently degrade electronics over time.
Why Whole-House Surge Protection Matters
Power surges can happen in an instant and travel through your electrical system. A properly installed SPD at the main panel diverts excess voltage safely to ground before it reaches your home’s circuits and equipment.
- Helps protect appliances, electronics, and hardwired devices throughout the home
- Reduces risk from lightning-induced surges and utility grid fluctuations
- Mitigates wear caused by HVAC, refrigerators, and other large loads cycling on and off
- Supports longer service life for valuable equipment and components
What We Installed for This Charlotte Home
We installed a whole-house surge protector directly at the main electrical panel. The device continuously monitors line conditions and, when a spike occurs, routes excess energy to ground to help keep it away from branch circuits and connected equipment.
The installed unit includes a $100,000 / 10-year warranty on covered home appliances in the unlikely event of protector failure. Per the manufacturer’s terms:
- All claims are secondary to your existing insurance policy
- Direct lightning strikes are excluded
- Covered Equipment includes: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components (breakers etc.), and hardwired appliances/devices (built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, home lighting) when said items are protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD
- Security systems and medical equipment are not included
Note: Coverage details are provided by the surge protector manufacturer and apply to the device installed during this project.
Our Installation Approach
For Ronald’s project, we followed our standard best-practice workflow to ensure safe, code-compliant performance:
- Evaluated the main service panel and grounding/bonding conditions
- Installed the surge protector at the panel with a dedicated breaker per manufacturer specifications
- Verified torque, connections, and device indicators
- Labeled the equipment and reviewed operation and maintenance basics with the homeowner
This careful process helps the SPD act as a first line of defense for the home’s electrical system and connected devices.
