Whole-House Surge Protection and Lighting Installation in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric recently completed a comprehensive electrical upgrade for Casey Hopkins in Charlotte, NC. From our Matthews branch, our Charlotte team delivered a code-compliant whole-house surge protection solution, upgraded the home’s grounding system, and supplied/installed three new light fixtures. The project was completed by technician Jose Rodriguez on November 3, 2025.
This service falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Whole-House Surge Protection categories, designed to protect your home’s electrical system and improve everyday functionality.
Project Highlights
- Whole-House Surge Protector: Installed at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground, helping protect your electrical system and connected devices from damaging surges caused by lightning events, utility fluctuations, and high-demand equipment cycling.
- Grounding System Upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typically ~8 ft) and replaced the grounding electrode conductor with a continuous run to the main service panel (up to 25 ft), improving system bonding and overall safety.
- Lighting Improvements: Supplied and installed three light fixtures, providing brighter, more efficient, and reliable lighting in key areas of the home.
$10k/3yr Surge Protection Coverage
The installed surge protector includes $10,000 of coverage for 3 years for eligible home appliances and hardwired devices in the unlikely event of protector failure. Coverage is secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy and excludes direct lightning strikes.
Examples of covered equipment can include: washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, inside HVAC unit, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components (like breakers), and hardwired appliances/devices (such as built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting) when properly protected by the installed SPD. Security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
This coverage adds peace of mind by helping safeguard sensitive electronics and extending the life of everyday appliances that are otherwise degraded by routine voltage spikes.
Why Surge Protection Matters for Charlotte Homes
Power quality events are common in growing metro areas like Charlotte. Even small, repeated surges can silently damage internal components in appliances and electronics. A properly installed whole-home surge protector at the main panel provides a first line of defense—reducing downtime, helping avoid premature equipment failure, and protecting your investment across the entire home.
Code-Compliant Grounding for Safety and Performance
An effective grounding system is essential for surge protection to work as intended. By installing a new ground rod and a continuous grounding electrode conductor back to the service panel, we improved the home’s fault path and ensured the surge protector can dissipate excess energy quickly and safely. This upgrade supports both safety and system stability, particularly during storms and utility disturbances.
Enhanced Lighting—Supplied and Professionally Installed
We provided and installed three new light fixtures to enhance visibility, comfort, and style. Our team verified mounting integrity, proper wiring connections, and correct switching, then tested each fixture for safe and reliable operation.
