Whole-House Surge Protection and Grounding Upgrade in Cary, NC
Our Raleigh branch recently completed a Panels & Service Upgrades project in Cary, NC for homeowner Donne Howard. On April 22, 2026, technician Cody Perry upgraded the home’s grounding system and installed a whole-house surge protector with $50,000 of covered equipment protection for 10 years. The result is a safer, more resilient electrical system designed to protect appliances and electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
This project was completed to modern safety standards and is backed by our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty, providing long-term peace of mind.
What We Upgraded
- Grounding system modernization: We upgraded the existing ground rod system to meet current safety requirements. This included driving a new ground rod and replacing the grounding electrode conductor with a continuous run to the main service panel (installed up to a 25 ft run as specified for this project). A robust grounding path helps divert excess voltage safely away from the home’s electrical system.
- Whole-home surge protection at the main panel: We installed a surge protective device that intercepts excess voltage and directs it to ground before it can reach sensitive circuits. This helps guard against surges from lightning-related events, utility grid fluctuations, and equipment cycling, and can help extend the lifespan of appliances and electronics.
Together, these upgrades strengthen the home’s electrical backbone—improving safety, reliability, and surge resilience.
About the $50K / 10-Year Surge Protection Coverage
The installed surge protector includes manufacturer coverage of up to $50,000 for 10 years on covered equipment in the unlikely event of device failure. Claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy, and direct lightning strikes are excluded.
Examples of covered equipment categories include:
- Washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer
- Dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, built-in microwaves
- HVAC equipment located inside the home, furnaces, air handlers, evaporator coils
- Hardwired ranges and other hardwired appliances/devices
- Home lighting, landscape lighting
- Electrical system components such as wiring, outlets/switches, and breakers
Security systems and medical equipment are not covered under this manufacturer warranty. Coverage applies when the protected items are on circuits safeguarded by the properly connected surge protective device.
Why Cary Homeowners Choose Whole-House Surge Protection
In a typical home, even routine, small surges can degrade sensitive electronics over time. A panel-mounted surge protector helps:
- Shield major appliances and electronics from destructive spikes
- Reduce nuisance damage from utility fluctuations and motor-driven equipment cycling
- Support the long-term health of your electrical system
When paired with a modern, continuous grounding path, surge protection works more effectively—delivering a comprehensive defense for your home’s power system.
