Completed: December 31, 2024 | Branch: Raleigh | Technician: Brad Williams

What we upgraded and installed

  • Whole-house surge protector: Installed at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground, helping shield appliances and sensitive electronics from spikes caused by lightning, utility fluctuations, or large loads cycling on and off.
  • Code-correct AC breaker: Replaced an existing 35-amp breaker with a properly sized 30-amp double-pole breaker to align with equipment labeling and electrical code, improving protection for the air conditioner.
  • Outdoor GFCI protection: Upgraded the front and back porch outlets to GFCI receptacles with new covers, enhancing shock protection in damp and outdoor environments.
  • Gas line bonding: Bonded the gas piping to the electrical grounding system using #6 bare copper, reducing the risk of arcing in the event of a fault and helping the system clear faults quickly.
  • Panel and wiring improvements: Included a new 20-amp double-pole breaker and NM-B 12/2 wiring as part of tidy, code-minded connections, along with #6 grounding conductors to maintain a reliable grounding path.

Why this matters for your Cary home

Surge protection is your first line of defense against voltage spikes that can degrade or destroy electronics and appliances over time. By placing the protection at the main panel, surges are intercepted before they travel through branch circuits, helping extend the life of everyday devices.

GFCI outlets are required in outdoor and damp locations. They monitor for imbalances in current and shut off power in milliseconds, adding a critical layer of shock protection on porches, patios, and exterior receptacles.

Right-sized breakers are essential for both safety and equipment longevity. An oversized breaker may not trip when it should. Matching the breaker to the equipment helps ensure proper fault protection and aligns with manufacturer specifications.

Bonding the gas line ties metal piping into the home’s grounding system so that, in the event of a fault, electricity has a low-resistance path to trip the breaker quickly—an important safety measure recognized by electrical codes.
