Completed Project: Whole-House Surge Protection and GFCI Installation in Fort Mill, SC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (Matthews) completed a whole-home surge protector install alongside a dedicated 20-amp GFCI outlet circuit for a customer in Fort Mill, SC. The work was performed by technician Viktor Opalko and completed on August 25, 2025 for Duke Energy - Allumia.

As part of our Panels & Service Upgrades services, this project strengthens the home’s electrical safety with code-minded protection at the main panel and at the point of use.

Project Overview

Power surges can originate from lightning activity, grid fluctuations, and the normal on/off cycling of large appliances. Over time, those spikes degrade sensitive electronics and hard-wired equipment. To help protect the entire electrical system in this Fort Mill home, we installed a panel-mounted surge protective device and added a new 20A GFCI-protected receptacle circuit for safe, reliable power where it was needed.

What We Installed

  • Whole-house surge protector mounted at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground, shielding the home’s wiring and connected equipment.
  • GFCI receptacle (with cover) for enhanced shock protection in a location where ground-fault protection is recommended by code.
  • 20A standard breaker labeled for small appliance use and coordinated with the new receptacle location.
  • Approximately 30 feet of 12/2 NM-B Romex for the new 20-amp branch circuit, including any required junction box as needed for a clean, professional run.

All components were installed with attention to proper terminations, panel organization, and labeling to support long-term safety and serviceability.

Surge Protection With Added Peace of Mind

The installed surge protector includes manufacturer-backed $50,000 coverage for 10 years in the unlikely event the device fails to protect covered home equipment. Coverage is typically secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance and generally excludes direct lightning strikes.

Covered equipment commonly includes major appliances and hard-wired systems (such as HVAC components, built-in microwaves, lighting, and similar devices) when protected by a properly connected SPD. Security systems and medical equipment are not covered under this manufacturer’s program. Always review the specific warranty terms for full details.

Safety and Code-Minded Installation

Our team focuses on practical upgrades that enhance safety and reliability:

  • GFCI protection where moisture or grounding concerns may be present.
  • Dedicated 20-amp capacity to support small appliances and reduce nuisance tripping.
  • Surge protection at the panel to help extend the lifespan of electronics and appliances.
  • Neat wire management, secure terminations, and clear panel labeling for future service.
