Whole-Home Surge Protector Installation in Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a whole-house surge protection upgrade for homeowner Laura Harosky in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project centered on installing a premium surge protective device at the main electrical panel to shield the home’s electrical system and connected equipment from damaging voltage spikes. Completed on December 15, 2025, the installation included permitting and code-compliant workmanship from our Panels & Service Upgrades and Whole-House Surge Protection specialists.

What we installed

  • Main panel surge protector: Mounted at the primary electrical service panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground before it can impact branch circuits, appliances, and electronics.
  • Electrical permit: We filed the required electrical permit with the county for a fully documented installation.
  • Supporting electrical work (same visit): Per the customer’s scope, we provided a dedicated 50-amp, 240V circuit using 6/3 NM‑B wiring, PVC conduit as applicable, a 50A breaker, and a standard receptacle for a customer-supplied major appliance.

This surge protection upgrade helps reduce risk from lightning-induced surges, utility grid fluctuations, and internal cycling of large appliances, while supporting the home’s power needs with a robust new circuit.

How whole-house surge protection protects your home

Installed at the main service panel, the surge protective device intercepts transient overvoltage events and redirects excess energy to ground. By stopping destructive spikes before they reach sensitive circuitry, it helps:

  • Protect refrigerators, HVAC equipment, ranges, dishwashers, and other hard‑wired appliances
  • Safeguard electronics connected across multiple circuits
  • Extend the lifespan of devices by reducing cumulative surge-related wear
  • Improve overall resiliency of your electrical system

$50,000 / 10‑Year Surge Protector Warranty

This installation includes a $50,000 coverage, 10‑year warranty for your home appliances in the unlikely event of surge protector failure. Key details from the manufacturer’s coverage for Covered Equipment include items such as:

  • Washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer
  • HVAC unit located inside the house
  • Trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove
  • Wiring, outlets/switches, and electrical system components (including breakers)
  • Hard‑wired appliances/devices: built‑in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting

Coverage applies when these items are protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD. All claims are secondary to your existing insurance policy, and direct lightning strikes are excluded. Security systems and medical equipment are not covered.

Permitting and compliance

Touchstone Electric filed the required county electrical permit for this project. Note: jurisdictions may require non‑electrical permits for certain scopes (e.g., Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, or separate contractor permits). Only the electrical permit is included here. If other permits are needed, we will outline what you may need to handle and can provide pricing to process additional non‑electrical permits upon request.
