Whole-Home Rewiring in Charlotte, NC — Permitted Upgrade
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (based in Matthews) completed a full-home rewiring for William Johnson in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Jose Rodriguez, this permitted project modernized the home’s electrical system, improved safety, and prepared the property for today’s power needs—including a dedicated 60-amp circuit for a Tesla EV charger and a new outdoor subpanel.
Date completed: July 28, 2025
Project Highlights
- Comprehensive whole-home rewiring: disconnect, remove outdated conductors, fish new wiring, reconnect devices, restore power, and test.
- New outdoor mid-sized subpanel (12/24 spaces, up to 125A) to support current and future circuits.
- Tesla-ready 60A circuit with dedicated wiring, conduit, and overcurrent protection for the customer-supplied charger.
- Permitting with the county and coordination of required inspections.
- Installation of customer-supplied special switches including two dimmers.
- Light fixture installation on an existing box/circuit.
- Crawl space electrical tune-up: rehung and secured wiring for neatness and serviceability.
- Grounding upgrade: new ground rod and continuous grounding electrode conductor to the main service panel.
- Relocated select circuits and conduit to optimize layout and accessibility.
Code-Forward Approach and Inspection Readiness
Our team delivered a code-compliant solution aligned with current NEC requirements and local jurisdictional standards. As inspectors in many areas adopt NEC 2020 provisions, certain breakers may require AFCI protection depending on circuit conditions. We evaluated the home’s systems, advised on any affected circuits, and prepared the installation for a smooth inspection process.
All work was permitted through the county, and our scope included coordination of electrical inspections. If additional non-electrical permits are ever required by a jurisdiction, our team advises homeowners on next steps so the project stays on track.
Tesla Charger Circuit and Subpanel Installation
To support EV charging, we installed a dedicated 60-amp circuit using THHN conductors in PVC conduit as appropriate for the run, along with the correct overcurrent and GFCI protection as required by code and equipment specifications. The customer-supplied Tesla charger was then connected as part of our appliance hookup service.
The new outdoor subpanel provides flexible capacity for the EV circuit and future additions. By separating and organizing branch circuits in a mid-sized 12/24 panel, the home now has room to grow without overloading existing equipment.
Safety and Usability Upgrades
- Grounding enhancement: new ground rod and continuous GEC to improve fault-clearing and overall system safety.
- Neat, serviceable wiring: crawl space conductors rehung and supported to protect insulation and improve accessibility.
- Comfort lighting controls: two dimmer switches installed for adjustable ambiance.
- Fixture installation: customer-selected light installed on an existing box/circuit.
