Whole-Home Rewiring in Waxhaw by Our Charlotte Branch

Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive whole-home rewiring for a 3,500-sq-ft residence in Waxhaw on February 26, 2026. Led by technician Will Cruz, our Charlotte team delivered a clean, code-compliant upgrade that modernized every circuit, boosted service capacity with a new 400-amp meter base, and enhanced protection with dual 200-amp main panels and whole-home surge protection. This project was performed for Carolina Custom Construction with full permitting and inspections handled by our crew.

Scope of Work Completed

  • Whole-home rewire (3,500 sq ft): Disconnected power, removed outdated wiring, fished new cable, reconnected all devices, restored power, then tested and inspected.
  • 400A meter base upgrade: Coordinated with the power provider, installed new meter and service components, conduit to the weatherhead, drip loop, and new grounding electrode conductors.
  • Two 200A indoor main panels (aluminum): Brought service equipment to current code, grounded and bonded, reconnected existing circuits, and clearly labeled all circuits.
  • New grounding system: Installed and bonded per code to improve safety and system performance.
  • Whole-house surge protection: Protection installed to help safeguard sensitive electronics; panels include a surge protector with a $10k warranty.
  • Lighting and devices: New can lights, upgraded outlets/switches, and installed customer-supplied light fixtures and a bathroom fan.
  • Permitting and inspections: Included in the project, along with power shutoff coordination. A generator was available for limited power during the outage upon request.

Our Rewiring Process for a Safer, Modern Electrical System

From start to finish, our team followed a structured process to minimize disruption and maximize safety. We began by safely shutting down the service, removing outdated wiring and devices, then routing new conductors with careful fishing techniques to preserve finishes wherever possible. After installing the new 400A service and dual 200A panels, we reconnected all circuits and devices, labeled everything for clarity, and performed thorough testing. Permits and required inspections were included, and we coordinated with the utility for the meter upgrade and load calculations.

Code Compliance and Safety Notes

Panels were grounded and bonded, and the home received a new grounding electrode system to meet current code requirements. As local inspectors implement NEC 2020 standards, some projects may require AFCI protection on certain circuits. If preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals are present, AFCI breakers can trip immediately and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our Charlotte team communicated these possibilities up front and ensured the Waxhaw project met inspection requirements.

Lighting, Devices, and Finishing Touches

In addition to the service and panel upgrades, we refreshed the living spaces with new can lighting and modern devices. Customer-supplied decorative fixtures and a bathroom fan were installed to spec, tested, and integrated into the newly labeled panels for a clean, finished result.
