Whole-Home Rewiring and Subpanel Installation in Monroe, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Matthews-based Charlotte team completed a comprehensive whole-home rewiring and kitchen subpanel project for homeowner James Vinson in Monroe, NC. Led by technician Brian Cain, this job was fully permitted and inspected, with work wrapped up on June 28, 2024.
This project modernized the home’s electrical infrastructure for safety, reliability, and future capacity—especially in the kitchen, where power demands are highest.
Project Overview
- Whole-home rewiring of approximately 1,000 sq. ft., replacing aging conductors and installing new devices throughout.
- New mid-sized indoor subpanel in the kitchen (12/24 configuration, up to 125A), fed by a new 4‑wire 1/0 SER from the exterior panel.
- Dedicated 20A kitchen circuit added for small appliances, including two new outlets.
- Three hardwired smoke detectors furnished and installed for enhanced life-safety coverage.
- Breaker updates to support general lighting, bathroom lighting, small appliances, and double‑pole loads such as a dryer or water heater.
- Permitting and inspection completed in accordance with local requirements.
How We Completed the Work
Our team safely disconnected power, carefully removed outdated wiring, and routed new, code-compliant cabling to each circuit. We installed a kitchen subpanel to centralize new and future kitchen loads, feeding it with a robust 1/0 SER cable from the exterior panel for capacity and stability. After reconnecting and labeling circuits, we installed new outlets and switches, then tested every device and circuit for proper operation.
To improve life-safety, we furnished and installed three new hardwired smoke detectors. Finally, we updated breakers—including standard 15A and 20A units and select double‑pole breakers—to properly match the home’s loads and provide a safer, more reliable electrical system.
Permits, Inspection, and Clean Execution
- Fully permitted and inspected: We coordinated permitting and inspection to ensure everything met local codes.
- Minimal disruption: When rewiring finished spaces, small drywall openings are sometimes necessary. We work to avoid them where possible and keep them as tidy as we can. Touchstone Electric is not responsible for Sheetrock repairs or painting.
- Clear expectations: For this project, a 30% deposit was used to secure scheduling, with the balance due at completion.
- Panel note: The exterior main panel did not include a main breaker; if an inspector requires one to be added, it would be an additional, inspector-driven scope item.
