Whole-Home Rewiring and 400A Service Upgrade in Waxhaw
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive whole-home rewiring and service upgrade for Carolina Custom Construction in Waxhaw on May 9, 2025. This project modernized the electrical infrastructure from top to bottom, adding capacity, safety, and long-term reliability for a custom build.
From permitting and utility coordination to final inspections, our licensed electricians handled every step to keep the project moving efficiently and up to code.
Scope of Work Completed
- 400A service upgrade: Installed and supplied a 400 amp meter base to support higher demand and future expansion.
- Dual main panels: Installed and supplied two 200 amp load centers to organize circuits and balance loads across the home.
- New grounding system: Upgraded the grounding system for improved safety and code compliance.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a whole house surge protector to safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances.
- Whole-house rewire: Rewired the residence with new branch circuits, updated cabling, and modern installation methods for dependable performance.
- New devices throughout: Supplied and installed updated electrical devices, including new switches and receptacles.
- Lighting upgrades: Installed and supplied can lights for bright, efficient ambient lighting in key living areas.
- Customer-supplied fixtures: Installed customer-provided light fixtures and a bathroom fan to match the project’s design selections.
- Permitting and inspections: Secured the required electrical permit and coordinated with inspectors to verify compliance.
Temporary Power and Permitting Support
To keep construction on schedule, we installed a fully compliant temporary power pole for overhead service. Our team coordinated the work order with the power company, pulled the county permit, and ensured the temporary setup passed inspection.
- Extra-tall meter/panel combo pole: Built for overhead service with proper clearances for utility connection.
- Complete hardware: Weatherhead, riser, and drop loop installed with 12 ft minimum ground clearance and 20 ft over roadways.
- Grounding and receptacle: Ground rod installed and one 20 amp receptacle mounted on the post for jobsite use.
This temporary power solution allowed trades to work safely and efficiently while the permanent 400A system was being constructed and inspected.
Why a 400A Upgrade Makes Sense for Modern Homes
Today’s homes demand more power for high-efficiency HVAC, EV charging, workshops, smart technology, and expanded living spaces. A 400 amp service, paired with dual 200 amp panels, delivers:
- Capacity for growth: Room for future circuits, additions, and high-load equipment without overload concerns.
- Improved load management: Dual panels help distribute circuits for balanced performance and easier maintenance.
- Enhanced protection: Whole-home surge protection reduces the risk of damage from spikes and utility events.
- Code-compliant safety: A modern grounding system helps ensure safe operation across the entire property.
