Whole-Home Rewiring and 200A Service Upgrade in Raleigh, NC
Our Raleigh team completed a comprehensive whole-home rewiring and 200-amp meter/panel combo upgrade for Blair and Jacob Covington on June 18, 2024. Led by technician Patrick Burke, this project modernized the home’s electrical system, removed outdated aluminum conductors, and added robust AFCI/GFCI protection across essential circuits for safer everyday use.
If you’re looking for a trusted residential electrician in Raleigh, this project showcases Touchstone Electric’s detailed planning, clean workmanship, and code-conscious execution from start to finish.
Project Scope and Room-by-Room Upgrades
We replaced legacy wiring with modern NM-B cabling, installed new devices, and set up dedicated circuits to support today’s appliances and safety standards. Highlights include:
- Kitchen: New wiring for lighting and switches, new receptacle boxes and outlets, and dedicated circuits to support appliances including the refrigerator.
- Living Areas: Rewired the living room and downstairs hallway for reliable lighting and receptacle layouts.
- Bedrooms and Office: Rewired the third bedroom and bedroom two, plus the office; installed outlets and switching upstairs; made up attic junction boxes for clean, accessible splices.
- Bathrooms & Hallways: Rewired the upstairs hallway and bathroom for updated lighting and GFCI-protected receptacles.
- Laundry & Mechanical: Ran dedicated circuits for the washer and dryer, water heater, and the range for dependable performance under load.
Throughout the home, we identified and eliminated aluminum wiring from the panel and branch circuits, replacing it with properly sized copper conductors and clearly labeled terminations.
200A Meter/Panel Combo and Service Work
To support the rewired home and future capacity, we installed a 200A meter/panel combo with new riser, conduit to the weatherhead, and service entrance cable to the drip loop. We coordinated utility scheduling for the temporary power drop, pulled permits, and set new grounding electrode conductors and ground rods for a robust grounding system.
As part of the upgrade, the new panel was neatly labeled and fitted with a surge protector that includes a $25k warranty per the project scope. We removed the older exterior panel to streamline the service and reduce maintenance points.
- Installed two 100A two-pole breakers for larger loads/subpanel needs.
- Configured additional two-pole breakers (30A, 40A) to support dedicated equipment.
- Installed new single-pole breakers and landed all rewired circuits with clear circuit indexing.
Safety, Protection, and Panel Rejuvenation
Protection was a priority. We installed AFCI/GFCI breakers for newly run kitchen circuits and GFCI breakers serving bathrooms, laundry, garage receptacles, and exterior outlets. The kitchen, laundry, and two exterior receptacles also received fresh GFCI outlets where appropriate.
We performed a thorough panel rejuvenation: vacuumed and cleaned the cabinet, re-tensioned connections at the ground lugs, bus bars, and main, verified correct line voltage, separated neutrals and grounds where required, applied antioxidant where needed, and checked AFCI/GFCI operation with customer consent. To round out life-safety upgrades, we installed seven battery-powered smoke/CO detectors.
Results You Can See and Feel
- Greater capacity: 200A service supports present and future electrical needs.
- Improved safety: AFCI/GFCI protection, updated grounding, and removal of aluminum conductors.
- Cleaner distribution: Clearly labeled circuits and organized junctions for easier maintenance.
- Reliability: Dedicated appliance circuits reduce nuisance trips and voltage drop under load.
