Whole-Home Rewiring and 150A Service Upgrade in Brevard, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Asheville team (serving the area from our Hendersonville branch) completed a comprehensive cabin rewire and service upgrade for Home Life Construction, Inc. in Brevard, NC. This project replaced hazardous legacy wiring, added a new 150-amp meter/panel combo with a code-compliant riser, installed a strategically placed subpanel, and upgraded the grounding system for safer, more reliable power throughout the home.
Completed: January 23, 2026 • Primary service: Whole-Home Rewiring • Lead technician: Aaron Smith
Why a Full Rewire Was Necessary
During evaluation, we found multiple safety and code issues common in older homes and piecemeal remodels:
- Mixed wiring types, including ungrounded knob-and-tube from the 1940s and later cloth-wrapped ungrounded conductors.
- Bare NM cable routed outside and beneath the structure—exposed to weather, animals, and moisture, which is often considered a wet location by inspectors.
- An original meter and riser that were not properly secured or in conduit.
- Newer homeruns tied into older, hard-to-reach sections behind walls and ceilings, creating a patchwork of unsafe splices and noncompliant terminations.
Given the construction style and limited access, a complete, carefully planned rewire was the safest and most code-compliant path forward.
What We Upgraded
- Whole-home rewire (approx. 1,036 sq ft): Disconnected power, removed outdated conductors, fished new wiring through walls and ceilings, reconnected all devices, and performed testing. Work was permitted and inspected.
- Re-device throughout: Replaced all standard and GFCI 120V outlets and switches, installing tamper-resistant receptacles for improved child safety and durability. Included new devices on the covered porch.
- 150A meter/panel combo: Coordinated the utility service drop, installed new service equipment, and integrated the grounding electrode system in accordance with current code.
- Riser with weatherhead in IMC conduit: Added a secure, code-compliant overhead service riser from the new meter to the weatherhead.
- Subpanel (12/24 spaces, up to 125A): Installed a midsized subpanel near the home’s accessible attic area, simplifying future service and avoiding new cable runs under the house.
- Feeder and bonding: Pulled approximately 20 ft of SER 1/0 (4-wire) feeder from the main panel to the subpanel for a dedicated, properly sized 4-wire connection.
- Grounding system upgrade: Drove a new ground rod and installed a continuous #6 bare grounding electrode conductor to the main service equipment.
Code and Safety Focus
Our installation brought the home into modern standards by eliminating ungrounded and exposed conductors, securing service equipment in conduit, and updating device protection. As inspectors continue adopting NEC 2020, the configuration allows for AFCI and GFCI protection where required. The rewire and grounding upgrades significantly reduce shock, fire, and nuisance-tripping risks associated with deteriorated legacy wiring.
Respect for the Home and Schedule
Because most walls and ceilings remained in place, our team planned careful wire-fishing and made minimal, strategic access openings as needed. Any potential finish impacts were discussed with the contractor on a per-item basis. We coordinated the utility power drop to minimize downtime and completed thorough testing before final inspection.
