Reliable Whole‑Home Generator Installation in Shelby, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a whole‑home generator installation and 200A panel upgrade for homeowner Sue Ross in Shelby, NC. This project was delivered by our Charlotte branch based in Matthews and completed on January 16, 2026. Our licensed electricians, Tyquan Johnson and Theo Coetsee, handled the full electrical scope, permits, and final inspection to ensure safe, code‑compliant backup power for this home.

What We Installed

  • Customer‑supplied Generac generator system with Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), battery, and equipment pad.
  • Load Shed Module (LSM) with a professional load calculation and a walkthrough to prioritize essential vs. non‑essential circuits during generator operation.
  • New 200A aluminum indoor main panel brought to current electrical code: grounded and bonded, existing circuits reconnected, and the panel fully labeled.
  • Included surge protection with a $10k warranty surge protector as part of the panel upgrade.
  • Service entrance and feeders using 4‑wire SER conductors and 2" PVC conduit with appropriate fittings and terminations.
  • Permitting and inspection for the electrical scope of work were included and completed.
  • Up to 50 ft of feeder and conduit for the generator installation, as specified.

Note: Fuel supply work for the generator (plumbing/gas) is not included in the electrical installation scope.

How the Load Shed Module Protects Your Home

During an outage, generators take time to reach full output, and sudden high demand can cause overloads. The Load Shed Module continuously monitors demand and automatically prioritizes critical circuits—such as heating, refrigeration, medical equipment, or well pumps—while temporarily pausing non‑essential loads. This smart control helps your whole‑home generator run efficiently, reduces nuisance trips, and ensures the most important systems stay powered first.

Safe 200A Panel Upgrade with Code Compliance

Upgrading to a modern 200A main panel increases capacity and safety. As part of this project, our team grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected existing circuits, and clearly labeled everything for easy future service. The upgrade included a $10k warranty surge protector and permitting/inspection to verify proper installation.

As inspectors implement newer code cycles (such as NEC 2020), they may require certain circuits to use AFCI breakers. In some homes, AFCIs can trip immediately due to pre‑existing wiring conditions (for example, a shared neutral). Finding and resolving these issues can require additional diagnostic time to isolate and correct the affected circuits. Our team will review these requirements with you if they apply to your home.

Power must be disconnected during a panel changeout; Touchstone Electric can provide a generator for limited power usage during the outage window to help minimize disruption.

Permits and Inspections—What’s Included

We filed the electrical permit and coordinated the final inspection for this Shelby project. Please note that jurisdictions may require other non‑electrical permits (such as historic, environmental/septic, zoning, or builder permits) depending on site conditions. These are not included in our electrical permit. If additional permits are needed, we’ll advise you on which permits you may handle directly and can provide pricing if you’d like us to process any non‑electrical permits on your behalf.
