Whole-Home Generator & Transfer Switch Installation in Mebane, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a customer-supplied Generac whole-house generator installation for homeowner Tim Gillow in Mebane, NC. Led by technicians Cody Perry and Brad Williams, this project delivered automatic standby power with integrated load management and a clean, code-compliant service setup. Completed in June 2025, the job included permitting, inspections, and utility coordination to ensure a safe, seamless transition to backup power.
What We Installed
- Generac whole-home generator (install only): Set and wired the customer’s generator with automatic transfer switch (ATS), load-shed modules, battery, and pre-set pad. Scope included electrical permitting/inspection and up to 50 ft of feeder and conduit. Equipment servicing is not included. Fuel connection by a licensed plumber is not part of this electrical scope.
- Generator cabling and raceways: Pulled 20 ft of generator-rated cable, installed 20 ft of 1-1/2" PVC conduit, and used 10 ft of 1-1/2" liquidtight flex for weather-resistant final connections between equipment.
- New 200A meter base: Coordinated the utility power drop, installed the new meter base, and added ground rods with grounding electrode conductors for a compliant grounding system.
- 200A outdoor subpanel: Installed a weather-rated panel to support the standby system. Surge protection and grounding for detached structures were not included in this scope.
- Dedicated breakers: Added one 20A double-pole breaker, two 30A double-pole breakers, and two 60A breakers to serve typical large loads such as HVAC, water heating, ranges, EV charging, and other heavy circuits.
When meter base work requires a planned outage, Touchstone can make a generator available for limited power usage upon request during the utility interruption.
Code, Permitting, and Inspections
All work was permitted and inspected. As more local jurisdictions adopt NEC 2020, inspectors may require upgrades to AFCI protection on certain circuits. Because some homes have preexisting conditions (for example, shared neutrals), new AFCI breakers can reveal issues that cause immediate tripping. If that occurs, additional diagnostics may be necessary to isolate and correct the condition. We discuss options with the homeowner before performing extra troubleshooting.
Fuel connection for the generator is performed by a licensed plumbing contractor under a separate plumbing permit. We can coordinate with the homeowner’s chosen plumber or work alongside a preferred subcontractor.
Reliable Standby Power with Smart Load Management
The automatic transfer switch provides hands-free switching between utility and generator power, restoring priority circuits quickly during an outage. Paired with load-shed modules, the system manages high-demand appliances so the generator operates efficiently without overload, helping maintain comfort and essential services for the home in Mebane, NC.
