Project overview

Touchstone Electric completed a well pump electrical wiring and code upgrade in Weddington, NC for RHODES BUILDERS. The project was handled by our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch, with technician Will Cruz leading the work. Completion date: July 18, 2025.

Scope: bring the well’s electrical components up to current code, install new underground feeder cable to the well motor, and ensure secure, protected terminations from the pump switch through the crawl space to the well head.

What we did

  • Code-compliant underground run: Trench of approximately 48 ft at a depth of about 24 inches to accommodate a direct-burial feeder to the well.
  • New UF cable installation: Pulled and installed roughly 88 ft of 12/2 UF cable, a weather-resistant, direct-burial wiring method sized for 20-amp circuits, between the pump switch and the new well motor.
  • Well motor connections: Properly terminated conductors to the new well motor, with clean, secure connections for long-term reliability.
  • Crawl space protection: Used a flexible wiring method from the pump switch in the crawl space and secured it to a 2x10 stud to protect the run and maintain neat routing.

This combination of upgrades ensures the well system has safe, durable power delivery and helps prevent nuisance trips, voltage drop concerns, and premature equipment wear linked to inadequate wiring.

Built to current code expectations

For well and yard circuits, burial depth and wiring method are critical. The new 12/2 UF feeder was installed for direct burial, with a typical minimum depth of 24 inches. In some scenarios, a reduced burial depth can be allowed when a circuit is GFCI-protected and installed with approved methods; we align our approach with current code and local inspector expectations.

  • Direct-burial UF cable: Rated for underground use, moisture-resistant, and designed to withstand soil conditions.
  • Secure terminations: Tight, corrosion-resistant connections at the pump switch and well motor to support consistent startup current and motor performance.
  • Mechanical protection: Flexible wiring in the crawl space neatly fastened to structure to reduce strain and abrasion.

Note: Before any trenching, North Carolina 811 utility locate requirements apply. Always request locates ahead of digging to protect underground services.
