Tesla Wall Connector Installation in Shelby, NC
Our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch completed a Level 2 EV charging upgrade for homeowner Zachary Borders in Shelby, NC. On October 7, 2025, lead electrician Jose Rodriguez installed a Tesla Wall Connector on a dedicated 60-amp circuit, filed the required electrical permit with the county, and added whole-house surge protection for added peace of mind.
What we installed
- Electrical permit: We handled filing the electrical permit with the county for this project.
- Dedicated 60A circuit: Installed a 60-amp breaker and ran approximately 50 feet of #6 SEU (3-wire) cable to support the Wall Connector.
- Tesla Wall Connector: Mounted and hardwired the customer-supplied Tesla charger for reliable Level 2 home charging.
- Whole-house surge protector: Added panel-level surge protection to help safeguard the home’s electrical system and connected appliances.
This configuration provides a robust, code-compliant setup designed specifically for EV charging, helping ensure consistent performance and longevity of the equipment.
Whole-house surge protection details
To complement the new EV circuit, we installed a panel-mounted surge protective device to divert excess voltage to ground during power spikes from lightning, utility fluctuations, or large appliances switching on and off. Benefits include:
- Helps protect sensitive electronics and major appliances from damaging surges.
- Supports longer equipment lifespan by reducing routine surge exposure.
- Installed at the main electrical panel for broad, whole-home coverage.
The surge protector used on this project includes a $50,000 10-year warranty against covered home appliances in the unlikely case of device failure. All claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy and the warranty excludes direct lightning strikes. “Covered Equipment” includes items such as washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, inside HVAC unit, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components, and hardwired devices like built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting—when protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD. Security systems and medical equipment are not included.
Permitting and code compliance
Touchstone Electric filed the electrical permit for this Tesla charger project and performed the work to current electrical code standards. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction; this project’s scope covered the electrical permit only. If a future project requires other non-electrical permits (for example, zoning or historic review), those would be handled separately.
The result for this Shelby homeowner
With a dedicated 60-amp Level 2 circuit and professionally installed Tesla Wall Connector, the home is set up for dependable, convenient charging. The added surge protection provides an extra layer of defense for the EV charger and the rest of the home’s electrical system.
