On September 30, 2024, Touchstone Electric completed a 50-amp Level 2 Tesla charging outlet for Duke Energy - Allumia in Charlotte, NC. Lead technician Steve Goheen from our Charlotte branch expertly handled the installation to deliver fast, reliable home EV charging.
This project was part of our EV Charging service line and included permit approval and a successful application of the Duke Energy EV rebate.
Project scope and what we installed
Our team designed and installed a dedicated, code-compliant circuit to power a Tesla Level 2 charger with safe, weather-resistant outdoor access.
- Dedicated 50A circuit for Level 2 EV charging
- 50A GFCI breaker for enhanced protection, as required for outdoor EV charging
- Weatherproof outdoor charging outlet with in-use cover and properly sealed box
- Secure 1-inch PVC conduit for the exterior run with appropriate fittings and supports
- Properly sized copper conductors for dependable performance and longevity
- Clean panel terminations, circuit labeling, and final testing under load
- Permit secured and approved prior to energizing the circuit

Safety, compliance, and permitting
Every EV charging project we complete in Charlotte follows a meticulous process: load calculations, panel capacity verification, permitting, and code inspections. For this installation, the permit was approved and the work included a GFCI-protected breaker and a weather-resistant enclosure to support safe outdoor use.
We also completed end-to-end functional testing to verify correct amperage, grounding, and GFCI operation before turning the system over to the customer.
