Our Charlotte branch, based out of Matthews, completed a comprehensive panel and safety upgrade for homeowner Robert Vogel in Shelby, NC. On May 6, 2025, technician Viktor Opalko consolidated two aging utility-room subpanels into a single, higher-capacity panel, added whole-home surge protection, and upgraded the grounding system for better safety and reliability.
This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Subpanel Installation services and was designed to improve electrical organization, capacity, and protection from power disturbances.
Work completed
- Replaced two subpanels with one larger 200A indoor subpanel (permitted installation).
- Installed a whole-home surge protector at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground and help protect connected appliances and electronics from surges.
- Upgraded grounding by installing new ground rods and a continuous grounding electrode conductor to the service equipment.
- Updated feeder with 1/0 SER, 4‑wire cable from the main panel to the subpanel to provide a dedicated equipment grounding conductor and proper neutral isolation.
- Configured new breakers to match the home’s loads and improve circuit organization.
Breaker and equipment details
- Subpanel: 200A indoor unit (permitted).
- Surge protection: Whole-home SPD designed to help guard against lightning-related surges, utility fluctuations, and equipment cycling.
- Grounding: New ground rods with continuous GEC routed to the main service equipment.
- Feeder: 1/0 SER (4-wire) from main panel to the subpanel.
- Overcurrent devices installed:
- 1× 100A 2‑pole (subpanel feed)
- 1× 30A 2‑pole (dryer, water heater, A/C, spa, EV charger, etc.)
- 1× 25A 2‑pole (small condenser, well pump, or mini‑split)
- 1× 20A 2‑pole (small appliances)
- 8× 20A single‑pole (general small-appliance circuits)
- 3× 30A single‑pole (appliances)
Result: a cleaner, safer panel layout with dedicated protection and a modern grounding path that supports today’s household loads.

Code and inspection notes
As local inspectors continue adopting the 2020 NEC, some existing circuits may require AFCI protection.
