Project overview for Elon, NC

Our Charlotte branch (Matthews) technician, Brian Cain, completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project for homeowner Chris Brooks in Elon, NC on October 27, 2023. This service combined a new subpanel installation with a 100A feeder, a full main panel tune-up, whole-home surge protection, a new grounding system, and a dedicated GFCI circuit for a dehumidifier, plus a convenience receptacle near the subpanel.

This project was part of our Panels & Service Upgrades offerings, with a focus on Subpanel Installation to improve capacity, reliability, and protection for the home’s electrical system.

What we installed and improved

  • Complete panel tune-up — Tightened all breaker, neutral, and ground terminations; removed double-tapped conductors; sealed open knockouts with duct seal; and cleaned excess grease from neutral bars where possible.
  • Whole-home surge protection — Installed a surge protective device to help defend appliances, electronics, and HVAC equipment from damaging voltage spikes.
  • New grounding system — Installed ground rods and ensured proper bonding to support safe fault clearing and overall system integrity.
  • Small outdoor subpanel — Added a new subpanel with a 100-amp feeder and matching 100-amp breaker, creating safe capacity for present loads and future circuits.
  • Dedicated GFCI dehumidifier circuit — Ran a 120V 15/20A dedicated branch circuit to a GFCI receptacle specifically for the homeowner’s dehumidifier.
  • Convenience receptacle near subpanel — Installed a standard outlet with a protective cover for service needs and general use near the new subpanel.

Benefits for this Elon home

  • Added capacity and flexibility — The new subpanel and 100A feeder provide room for new circuits and future projects without overloading existing equipment.
  • Improved safety and reliability — Correcting double taps, tightening terminations, and sealing openings reduce heat, arcing, and moisture intrusion risks.
  • Stronger whole-home defense — Surge protection helps safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances from transient surges.
  • Upgraded grounding — A properly installed grounding system supports effective fault paths and enhances protection for people and property.
  • Purpose-built circuit for moisture control — A dedicated GFCI circuit keeps the dehumidifier on a reliable, code-appropriate supply.

Our approach and workmanship

Our team followed current best practices throughout: verifying conductor sizes and overcurrent protection, ensuring tight and secure terminations, labeling new circuits, and confirming proper grounding and bonding connections. The outdoor-rated subpanel was installed with neat routing and a clean layout to support ease of service down the road.

Panel rejuvenation steps such as retorquing lugs, cleaning neutral bars, and sealing unused openings help extend equipment life and reduce nuisance issues. With surge protection and a dedicated GFCI circuit added, the home now benefits from both system resilience and targeted protection for moisture-control equipment.
