Professional Subpanel Installation in Waxhaw, NC

Our Charlotte team, based out of our Matthews branch, completed a clean, code-compliant subpanel installation for homeowner Alyson Walker in Waxhaw, NC. Led by technician Viktor Opalko, this project delivered new capacity and safer distribution using a midsized indoor subpanel, a dedicated 100A feeder, GFCI protection, and properly permitted work. Completed on October 9, 2024, the upgrade positions the home for future electrical needs while meeting local code requirements.

Scope of Work

  • Installed a midsized indoor subpanel (12/24, up to 125A) for efficient circuit expansion and balanced load management.
  • Added a 100A 2‑pole breaker in the main panel to safely feed the new subpanel.
  • Ran approximately 80 ft of 1/0 SER (4‑wire) feeder cable for a reliable, code‑correct subpanel supply with isolated neutrals and grounds inside the subpanel.
  • Protected the feeder using 2" PVC conduit with fittings, connectors, and supports (about 20 ft), ensuring a durable and tidy pathway.
  • Extended/added 20‑amp branch circuits with about 200 ft of 12/2 NM‑B Romex to serve appliances and general‑use receptacles as needed.
  • Installed two 20A GFCI breakers to provide ground‑fault protection for locations where it’s required by code, such as bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, exteriors, and basements/crawlspaces.
  • Installed two standard outlets with new covers for convenient, safe power access.
  • Filed the electrical permit with the county and prepared the project for inspection and approval.

Built for Safety and Reliability

This subpanel upgrade was designed to enhance both safety and usability. The 4‑wire feeder and properly isolated neutral/ground bars meet modern code practices for subpanels. Conduit routing and secure strapping protect the feeder path, while GFCI protection helps reduce shock risk in damp or outdoor areas. We also labeled the panel and circuits for straightforward identification, helping future maintenance and additions go smoothly.

Permitting and Compliance

Touchstone Electric secured the electrical permit for this Waxhaw project to ensure compliance and a smooth inspection process. Please note: jurisdictions can require additional non‑electrical permits for certain scopes of work. The permit included with this project covers only the electrical permit. If a Historic Preservation permit, Environmental/Septic permit, Zoning application, separate Subcontractor permit, Builder’s permit, or other non‑electrical documentation is needed, those items are not included. If additional permits are required, we’ll advise you on what to file and can provide pricing to process any non‑electrical permits as needed.

What This Upgrade Means for the Home

With a properly sized 12/24 subpanel and a dedicated 100A feeder, the home now has extra circuits available for future projects—whether that’s workshop equipment, a finished space, or additional kitchen loads. The result is a safer, more flexible electrical system that’s neatly organized and ready to grow as your needs change.
