Project overview

Touchstone Electric completed a professional subpanel installation with breaker upgrades for Timber Ridge Apartments in Charlotte, NC. Performed by our Charlotte branch team based in Matthews, this project enhanced available circuit capacity and safety protection while aligning with current NEC requirements. The work was completed on November 21, 2025 by technicians Danny Bishop and Robert Sloan.

Category: Panels & Service Upgrades | Service: Subpanel Installation

Scope of work

To create room for new and existing loads and improve overcurrent protection, our electricians installed a new indoor subpanel and carefully organized circuit distribution. The panel installation was followed by targeted breaker additions to support general lighting, appliances, and code-required locations.

  • Furnished and installed a new indoor subpanel with clean labeling and balanced load distribution
  • Filed and managed the electrical permit with the county to ensure an inspected, code-compliant installation
  • Installed 4x 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits
  • Installed 1x 20A GFCI breaker for receptacle circuits in areas where ground-fault protection is required
  • Installed 3x 20A standard breakers to support small-appliance and general-use circuits
  • Installed 1x 25A double‑pole standard breaker for equipment loads such as a small condenser or mini-split
  • Installed 1x 30A double‑pole standard breaker to serve a 240V appliance circuit (e.g., dryer or water heater)
  • Installed 1x 50A standard breaker for higher‑demand equipment or EV charging
  • Installed 1x 60A standard breaker for larger equipment or sub-feed needs
  • Provided additional on‑site support labor to maintain a safe, efficient workflow

Code compliance and permitting

All work was performed to meet current NEC standards and local inspection requirements. We secured the required electrical permit and coordinated inspections for a smooth process from start to finish.

As jurisdictions continue to implement newer NEC editions, inspectors may require certain circuits to be upgraded with AFCI protection. It’s important to know that adding AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping until corrected. When encountered, our team can diagnose and resolve these issues so your system operates safely and reliably.

GFCI and AFCI devices serve different safety functions, and we install each where code requires. In this project, adding a GFCI breaker and multiple standard breakers helped ensure the right level of protection for each circuit type.

Benefits of a subpanel upgrade

  • Added capacity: Frees up breaker spaces and supports new circuits and equipment
  • Safer distribution: Modern breakers improve overcurrent and ground-fault protection
  • Better organization: Clearly labeled circuits make future maintenance faster and safer
  • Inspection-ready: Permitted, code-compliant work that passes local inspections
