Basement Subpanel Installation in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a code-compliant subpanel installation for a basement project in Charlotte, NC. This Panels & Service Upgrades job was handled by our Charlotte branch (Matthews location) for DeRhodes Construction (Amen Corner Construction, LLC), providing safe, expandable power for present and future needs.
Technician: Theo Coetsee
Completed: July 29, 2025
Primary categories: Panels & Service Upgrades, Subpanel Installation
Project Overview
For this basement electrical upgrade, our team supplied and installed a midsize indoor subpanel (12/24 circuits, up to 125A). We pulled the required electrical permit, installed a 50A feeder breaker, and ran approximately 60 feet of 6/3 NM-B Romex to power the subpanel. The result is a clean, organized distribution point ready for dedicated basement circuits and future expansion.
What We Installed
- Midsize indoor subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Provides room for additional basement circuits while keeping the main panel uncluttered.
- 50A standard breaker: Feeds the subpanel with reliable capacity for typical basement loads and equipment.
- 6/3 NM-B feeder (about 60 ft): Properly sized copper NM-B for a 50A, 240V feeder, neatly routed with appropriate support and terminations.
- Electrical permit: We filed the electrical permit and coordinated inspections to verify compliance.
Note: The subpanel product includes permitting but does not include conduit/trenching, additional breakers beyond what’s listed, or grounding systems required for detached structures.
Code, Inspection, and AFCI Notes
As the Charlotte area continues implementing NEC 2020 requirements, inspectors may call for AFCI protection on certain circuits. If an AFCI tripping issue reveals a pre-existing condition (such as a shared neutral), additional diagnosis may be required to locate and correct the problem. Our team is experienced with these scenarios and communicates clearly about next steps if they arise.
Why Add a Basement Subpanel?
- Room to grow: Easily add dedicated circuits for lighting, outlets, a workshop, or future finishing projects.
- Cleaner organization: Keep basement circuits separated for simpler troubleshooting and labeling.
- Code-aligned power distribution: Properly sized feeder, breaker, and grounding/bonding help keep your system compliant.
- Improved safety: Reduces overloading risks on the main panel by distributing demand.
Permitting and What’s Included
Touchstone Electric filed the electrical permit for this Charlotte project and coordinated inspections. Some projects may require additional non-electrical permits (e.g., historic, environmental, zoning, or general building). If those are needed, we’ll advise you on what to obtain or provide separate pricing for handling them.
