Subpanel Installation & Outdoor Disconnect in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a code-ready outdoor subpanel and service disconnect for Village on the Park- c/o Cusick Community Management in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Chris Rogers from our Charlotte (Matthews) branch, this project was finished on August 12, 2025 and delivers safe, expandable power distribution for future needs.
Scope of Work
- Outdoor-rated subpanel (small 4/8) up to 125 amps, ideal for spas, pools, garages, and accessory circuits. This service included permitting.
- Outdoor service disconnect to provide a clear, accessible means to safely shut off power in compliance with current code requirements.
- THHN feeder conductors installed per manufacturer and code specifications, including 6 ft of #6 THHN and 5 ft of #4 THHN (3–4 strand) to support a robust subpanel feeder.
- Two 20A tandem breakers to support small appliance or general-purpose branch circuits served by the new subpanel.
The subpanel equipment was labeled and organized to simplify maintenance and future expansion. While the base subpanel package typically excludes conduit, trenching, and breakers, we furnished the feeder conductors and the required tandem breakers for this installation. Grounding upgrades for detached structures, if needed in the future, would be a separate scope.
Why This Upgrade Matters
- Safety and compliance: An exterior disconnect enhances first-responder safety and supports inspection readiness.
- Reliability: Quality THHN feeders and properly sized breakers provide stable power delivery.
- Expandable capacity: The small 4/8 outdoor panel creates room for additional circuits as the property’s needs evolve.
- Convenience: Clearly labeled circuits and an accessible panel streamline troubleshooting and future additions.
Code and Inspection Notes (NEC 2020)
As local jurisdictions continue adopting NEC 2020, inspectors may require certain circuits to be upgraded to AFCI protection. In some homes, AFCI breakers can trip immediately due to preexisting wiring conditions such as shared neutrals or other legacy issues.
If a shared neutral is discovered on an affected circuit, locating and correcting it can involve opening devices on the circuit to isolate the issue, which may require additional diagnostic time. Our team approaches these situations methodically to help you meet code while maintaining performance and safety.
Project Outcome
The community now has a cleanly installed, outdoor-rated subpanel and disconnect that supports present loads and simplifies future upgrades. With permitting handled and components sized to current standards, the installation is positioned for smooth inspections and dependable operation.
