Project overview
Touchstone Electric’s Hendersonville team completed a comprehensive subpanel installation and electrical upgrade for homeowner Curt Watkins in East Flat Rock, NC. The project, led by technician Tyler Harris and finished on December 23, 2024, included both rough-in and trim phases performed according to the customer’s plans and current NEC requirements.
From a new 50A subpanel to modern recessed lighting, outdoor motion lights, and an interconnected smoke detection system, this upgrade improves safety, reliability, and day-to-day convenience throughout the home.
Scope of work completed
- 50A subpanel (indoor): Installed a mid-sized 12/24-space panel rated up to 125A. The existing feeder was evaluated and reused, and circuits were organized and labeled for clarity.
- Recessed lighting: Installed and trimmed 18 six-inch can lights for clean, even illumination and a modern finish.
- Outdoor safety lighting: Added two motion-sensor fixtures at the garage and one at the back door to enhance visibility and security after dark.
- Interlinked smoke detection: Installed a fully interconnected smoke alarm system, including interlink wiring, so all alarms sound together for faster notification.
- Customer-supplied fans: Mounted and wired owner-provided ceiling fans as specified on the plans.
- Outlets and switches: Wired devices and lighting controls according to the customer’s layout and NEC code.
- Breaker configuration: Installed a 50A breaker for the subpanel feeder, 20A AFCI protection where required, 15A GFCI protection for applicable locations, and standard 15A breakers for dedicated lighting circuits.
- Permits and inspections: Filed the electrical permit and coordinated required inspections for both rough-in and final stages.
Rough-in and trim, done right
During the rough-in, our team routed circuits, landed boxes, and installed interlink wiring for smoke detectors, all in line with stamped plans and local code. At trim-out, we set devices and fixtures, installed smoke detectors, connected appliances per plan, and verified proper labeling and operation throughout the upgraded areas.
Built to current NEC standards
Work was completed to the latest NEC 2020 code adopted locally. That includes:
- AFCI protection in living areas and other required spaces to help reduce arc-fault risks.
- GFCI protection for kitchens, exterior locations, basements, crawl spaces, and similar areas to enhance shock protection.
- Service surge protection and verification of proper bonding and grounding connections.
Note: When adding AFCI protection to existing wiring, preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping. If this occurs, additional diagnostics may be needed to isolate and correct the issue.
