Project overview

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a Panels & Service Upgrades project in Charlotte, NC on November 13, 2024. Led by technician Steve Goheen, we installed a 12‑space, 60A outdoor subpanel and upgraded several branch‑circuit breakers to improve safety, reliability, and code compliance for homeowner Senitria Goodman.

The home had an older Federal Pacific panel. Because this equipment is no longer UL listed, our approach focused on enhancing protection and capacity by adding a properly rated subpanel and updating key breakers, preparing the system for inspection and future expansion.

Scope of work

  • Outdoor subpanel installation: Installed a midsized 12/24‑circuit outdoor-rated subpanel configured on a 60A feeder. The subpanel provides organized circuit distribution, clear labeling, and room for growth. Our work included permitting and coordination for inspection.
  • Breaker upgrades: Replaced and added breakers to match circuit needs and improve protection:
    • Four (4) standard 20A single‑pole breakers for small appliance/general‑use circuits.
    • Three (3) standard 30A double‑pole breakers suitable for 240V loads such as HVAC equipment or similar dedicated circuits.
  • Quality checks: Verified torque, continuity, and proper breaker sizing; ensured clean terminations; and labeled new circuits for clarity.

Why this upgrade matters

  • Safety first: Federal Pacific equipment is no longer UL listed, and many homeowners choose upgrades to align with modern safety standards. The new subpanel and breakers help reduce nuisance trips, overheating risks, and unclear circuiting.
  • Code compliance: A properly installed, outdoor‑rated subpanel with correct breaker sizing prepares the electrical system for permitting and inspection, supporting compliance with current standards in Charlotte, NC.
  • Capacity and organization: The 12‑space subpanel creates room for present and future circuits. Clearly labeled breakers make maintenance and troubleshooting simpler.
  • Reliability: New breakers improve protective performance compared to aging equipment, supporting stable operation of both 120V and 240V loads.

Notes on AFCI requirements

As inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 in our area, some existing circuits may be required to have AFCI protection. While AFCI breakers increase safety, they can reveal preexisting wiring conditions such as shared neutrals that may cause immediate tripping. If such conditions are found, additional diagnostic work—like tracing and separating shared neutrals—may be necessary to resolve the issue fully. Our team will walk you through options if this applies to your home.
