Subpanel Installation and Breaker Replacement in Indian Trail

Touchstone Electric recently completed a targeted electrical upgrade for homeowner Tyler LaShomb in Indian Trail, NC. Our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch installed a midsized, outdoor-rated subpanel (12/24, up to 125A), replaced several compromised breakers, added whole-home surge protection, and upgraded key receptacles to GFCI for improved safety and reliability.

During our assessment, we noted signs of heat damage on select breakers and the absence of whole-house surge protection. The scope focused on restoring safe operation, creating room for future circuits, and hardening the home’s electrical system against voltage spikes and everyday wear.

What We Installed

  • 125A outdoor subpanel (midsized 12/24): Professionally mounted and permitted to provide additional circuit capacity and better load management.
  • Breaker replacements: Select breakers were replaced to address damage and reliability concerns, including:
    • Two 60A standard breakers (commonly used for ranges, furnaces, small subpanels, or EV charging loads)
    • One 40A standard breaker (typical for larger appliances)
    • One 30A double-pole breaker (often for dryers, water heaters, or condensers)
    • One 15A double-pole breaker (small appliance or specialty load)
  • Whole-house surge protector: Installed at the main panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground and help protect sensitive electronics and appliances from grid fluctuations and storm-related surges.
  • GFCI upgrades (3 locations): Replaced and properly labeled receptacles in required areas to enhance shock protection and code readiness.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Safety first: Replacing heat-damaged or worn breakers reduces the risk of nuisance trips, arcing, and potential overheating.
  • Added capacity and flexibility: The 125A subpanel creates organized space for present and future circuits without overcrowding the main panel.
  • Protection from surges: Whole-home surge protection helps extend the life of your appliances and electronics by mitigating harmful voltage spikes.
  • Code-focused improvements: GFCI upgrades bring critical areas into alignment with current safety standards.

Code and Inspection Notes (What to Expect)

As local jurisdictions continue adopting NEC 2020 requirements, inspectors may require certain circuits to be protected by AFCI breakers. In some homes, AFCI devices can trip immediately due to preexisting conditions such as shared neutrals. If that occurs, it can take additional diagnostic time to locate and correct the issue. Our team explains these possibilities up front so you know what to expect during and after inspection.
