Completed Subpanel Installation and Addition Wiring in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (Matthews) partnered with Focht Pro Builders to wire a new home addition and install a midsized indoor subpanel in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, our team completed the project in September 2025 with a focus on safety, code compliance, and a clean, builder-friendly finish.
Project Highlights
- Midsized indoor subpanel installation with a dedicated 4‑wire feeder
- Full rough-in wiring for the new addition per stamped plans and NEC requirements
- Three new 6-inch recessed cans and multiple dimmer installations
- Ceiling fan wiring, bracing, and fan installations, including the family room
- Under-cabinet plugmold/wiremold solution using homeowner-provided raceway
- New exterior weatherproof outlets at the front of the home
- Rear and additional flood lights for improved security and visibility
- Grounding system upgrade with a new ground rod and continuous grounding electrode conductor
Subpanel and Feeder Upgrade
To support the new load from the addition, we installed a midsized indoor subpanel and ran a 4‑wire SER feeder between the main service and the new subpanel location. This four-conductor setup keeps neutrals and grounds properly isolated at the subpanel and provides capacity for present and future circuits. Where needed, we utilized PVC conduit and THHN conductors for protected, code-compliant runs.
We also upgraded the grounding system with a new ground rod and a continuous grounding electrode conductor, helping ensure safe fault paths and improved system reliability.
New Addition Rough-In to Code
Our electricians performed a full rough-in based on customer-provided, stamped plans and in accordance with current NEC standards. The scope included dedicated circuits for kitchen small appliances, laundry, dining, bathrooms, and appliances such as the range, cooktop, microwave, dishwasher, disposal, washer, and dryer. Device locations were wired per plans, and box placements were dressed and ready for inspection.
We laid out circuits to meet GFCI and AFCI protection requirements where applicable and coordinated with the local inspector to align with current code interpretations throughout rough-in and final.
Lighting, Controls, and Comfort Upgrades
For everyday comfort and flexibility, the team installed three 6-inch recessed cans and added multiple dimmers for customized lighting control. We wired, braced, and installed new ceiling fans, including in the family room, ensuring proper support and balanced airflow.
In the kitchen, we completed an under‑cabinet plugmold/wiremold solution using homeowner-provided raceway, helping create convenient countertop power while keeping the backsplash clean and uncluttered.
Outdoor Power and Security Lighting
To improve exterior usability and safety, we installed weatherproof outlets at the front of the home and added flood lights at the rear, along with additional fixtures for expanded coverage. We used outdoor‑rated fittings and enclosures to protect conductors and devices from the elements.
Permits, Inspections, and Scope Notes
The project was permitted and inspected, with our team coordinating scheduling and walkthroughs to keep the build moving. Per the builder’s notes, porch infrared heaters shown on the blueprints were excluded from this phase and would be added by change order once model details were confirmed. Any homeowner-driven plan changes were addressed through standard change management after the initial walkthrough.
