Subpanel Installation and Breaker Upgrades in Flat Rock, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a code-compliant subpanel installation for Ember House Holdings LLC in Flat Rock, NC. The project addressed an unsafe condition where a dryer had been double-tapped on the main breaker prior to our earlier service change. On November 20, 2025, our technician, Aaron Smith, installed a dedicated subpanel in the crawlspace and upgraded the associated breakers to bring the system in line with current electrical standards.

Project Goals

Our primary objective was to remove the hazardous double-tap connection and provide a safe, properly protected circuit for the dryer. Adding a subpanel also created room for present and future circuits without overloading the main service equipment.

What We Installed

  • Small 4/8 Subpanel (up to 125A) installed in the crawlspace to re-feed the dryer and allow orderly circuit distribution. This scope included permitting.
  • 100A, 2-pole breaker to feed the new subpanel, providing a robust and properly protected feeder.
  • 30A, 2-pole standard breaker dedicated to the dryer, ensuring the appliance is served by the correct overcurrent protection.

This configuration replaces the unsafe double-tap with a clean, labeled layout that improves safety, serviceability, and compliance.

Why a Crawlspace Subpanel?

For many homes in Flat Rock, NC, a compact subpanel is an efficient way to manage branch circuits close to where they’re needed. In this case, the crawlspace provided an accessible location that:

  • Eliminates the hazardous double-tap at the main breaker.
  • Creates capacity for current and future circuits without crowding the main panel.
  • Shortens circuit runs, which can improve voltage drop and ease maintenance.

Code Compliance and Safety Considerations

As local inspectors continue adopting NEC 2020 requirements, homeowners may be asked to upgrade certain breakers to AFCI protection in living areas and other locations. While AFCI technology enhances safety, it can reveal preexisting wiring issues—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping until corrected.

When an AFCI upgrade is required, additional troubleshooting may be needed to isolate legacy wiring problems. Our team performs these diagnostics methodically to ensure both compliance and reliability, with clear communication about any findings and recommended remedies.

Benefits of This Upgrade

  • Safety restored: Removes an illegal double-tap and provides correct overcurrent protection for the dryer.
  • Room to grow: The new 4/8 subpanel supports additional circuits if needed.
  • Cleaner layout: Organized distribution helps with future service, labeling, and troubleshooting.
  • Inspection-ready: Work completed under permit and aligned with current code guidance.
