Scope of work
- Dedicated 20A soaking tub circuit: We installed a new, dedicated 20-amp circuit sized to the tub’s published specifications to ensure safe, reliable operation without overloading existing bathroom circuits.
- GFCI/AFCI combination breaker: The new circuit is protected at the panel by a 20A GFCI/AFCI combo breaker to address both shock protection near water and arc-fault fire protection.
- Professional wiring: Approximately 35 feet of 12/3 NM-B cable was routed neatly and secured to serve the new dedicated circuit. All terminations were tightened, labeled, and tested.
- Bathroom exhaust fan replacement: We removed the old fan housing, adjusted the drywall opening for a proper fit, reworked the existing duct connection for smooth airflow, and connected the customer-supplied unit to the existing power source. No new duct runs were installed.
- Switch replacements: Existing switches were replaced as part of the bathroom updates for a clean, reliable finish.
- Grounding system upgrade: We drove a new ground rod and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) back to the main service panel (within the standard run distance) to enhance overall system grounding and code compliance.
- Electrical permitting: Touchstone Electric handled the electrical permit with the county for this scope of work, aligning with Asheville-area requirements.
Safety and code considerations
Why a dedicated tub circuit matters: Soaking tubs and spa equipment can draw significant current. A dedicated, properly sized circuit reduces nuisance trips, prevents overloaded wiring, and helps meet manufacturer and code requirements.
About GFCI/AFCI protection: The combination breaker adds both ground-fault and arc-fault protection to reduce shock and fire risks—especially important around water and bathroom environments.
Important note on AFCI upgrades: Installing AFCI protection can expose preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping. Resolving these conditions can require diagnostic time, which may include opening devices and lighting on the affected circuits to isolate and correct the issue.
Permits and jurisdictional requirements: This project included the electrical permit. Other jurisdictional permits (for example, historic, septic, zoning, or builder-related permits) are separate when required by the authority having jurisdiction.
