Shed Subpanel Installation in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, helped homeowner Zach Drechsler bring safe, reliable power to a backyard shed in Charlotte, NC. Completed on August 27, 2025 by technician Danny Bishop, this project added a dedicated outdoor-rated subpanel and a GFCI-protected 20-amp circuit to serve everyday shed needs—three convenient outlets and two interior lights with switches—while meeting current electrical best practices.

After the work was finished, Zach praised our team with a positive review, highlighting our clear communication and craftsmanship.

Project Overview

This outbuilding power upgrade was designed to be durable, code-conscious, and tidy. The homeowner provided a 20-inch-deep trench from the house to the shed as planned. We then installed 3/4-inch PVC conduit to protect the feeder conductors and transition cleanly into a compact, outdoor-rated subpanel mounted at the shed. The 20-amp branch circuit in the shed is protected by GFCI for enhanced safety in a potentially damp environment.

  • Small Outdoor Subpanel (4/8 space): Weather-resistant and sized for present needs with room for modest expansion.
  • Feeder and Conduit: THHN conductors pulled through 3/4-inch PVC conduit for a long-lasting underground run.
  • Overcurrent Protection: A properly sized breaker in the home’s main panel supplies the shed subpanel.
  • 20A GFCI-Protected Circuit: Dedicated 120-volt, 20-amp branch circuit serving the shed’s devices.
  • Three Outlets + Two Lights: New receptacles and light fixtures, with switches installed for convenient control.
  • Grounding: Grounding and bonding configured in line with detached-structure requirements for safe fault clearing.
  • Electrical Permit Filed: We handled the electrical permit for this scope. No inspection was scheduled for this project.

The result is a neat, code-minded installation that gives the shed dependable electricity for tools, lighting, and small equipment—without overloading the home’s existing circuits.

Why a Subpanel Is a Smart Choice for a Shed

  • Room to Grow: An outdoor-rated subpanel allows for future additions, like more outlets, task lighting, or small equipment circuits.
  • Cleaner Wiring: Centralized breakers at the shed keep troubleshooting simple and keep the home’s main panel organized.
  • Safety First: GFCI protection, proper grounding, and correct burial depth help protect people and property.
  • Code Alignment: Professionally sized conductors, conduit, and overcurrent protection help ensure a compliant install.

Code and Safety Notes for Charlotte Homeowners

As jurisdictions in and around Charlotte continue implementing newer editions of the National Electrical Code, inspectors may call for updates like AFCI protection on certain circuits. These safety devices can reveal pre-existing wiring conditions that should be addressed to maintain safe operation. Our licensed team explains these requirements up front and delivers solutions that align with local expectations.

For underground runs, correct burial depth, proper conduit, and listed fittings are essential. Inside the shed, using appropriately rated cable and installing GFCI where required helps protect against shock hazards—especially in utility spaces that see dust, moisture, and frequent use.
