Service Disconnect, 20A Breaker & NM‑B Wiring in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of our Matthews branch, completed a code-required equipment disconnect installation, a 20‑amp breaker addition, and new NM‑B wiring runs for dedicated appliance circuits at a Charlotte home. The project was completed on March 27, 2025 by our technician Viktor Opalko for our customer Prime Comfort.
As a Panels & Service Upgrades specialist, we ensured the installation met current safety standards and was ready for immediate use with new appliances.
What We Installed
- 20A Standard Breaker: Added a dedicated 20‑amp breaker to support a small‑appliance circuit, providing reliable capacity for kitchen and other high‑demand receptacles.
- ≤60A Pull‑Out Service Disconnect: Installed a code‑required equipment disconnect to safely isolate power to a specific appliance for maintenance—ideal for A/C units, water heaters, and similar equipment.
- 75 ft NM‑B 12/2 Wiring: Routed and secured 12/2 cable for a 20‑amp circuit, including proper support and junction box integration where needed.
- 75 ft NM‑B 8/2 Wiring: Pulled 8/2 cable for a higher‑demand appliance circuit (commonly used for electric ranges/ovens), with terminations prepared for final device connections.
All wiring was neatly routed, supported, and labeled for clarity at the panel and relevant junction points.
Why a Service Disconnect and Dedicated Circuits Matter
- Safety: A pull‑out disconnect provides a clear, local means to de‑energize equipment during service or emergencies.
- Code Compliance: Many appliances require an accessible disconnect and properly sized, dedicated circuits.
- Performance: Dedicated 20A and higher‑capacity circuits help prevent nuisance tripping and voltage drop under load.
- Longevity: Correct breaker sizing and copper NM‑B wiring reduce heat and wear on equipment and conductors.
How Our Charlotte Team Completed the Work
After assessing the panel capacity and appliance requirements, we installed the 20A breaker and a pull‑out service disconnect in appropriate, accessible locations. We then ran dedicated NM‑B 12/2 and 8/2 cable, using proper support, protection at penetrations, and clean routing to minimize future service conflicts. Final checks included torqueing terminations to spec, verifying grounding and polarity, and labeling circuits for easy identification.
The result is a clean, reliable upgrade that supports present and future appliance needs with safer, more organized power distribution.
