Electrical Panel and Surge Protection Upgrade in Salisbury, NC
On March 5, 2024, our Charlotte branch (Matthews team) completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project for homeowner Samuel Barr in Salisbury, NC. Lead technician Brian Cain installed a new 125A subpanel in the laundry room, added whole-house surge protection, upgraded the grounding system, and performed a targeted panel tune-up to boost safety and reliability throughout the home.
Scope of Work
- 125A Laundry-Room Subpanel: We supplied and installed a properly sized 125-amp subpanel to provide additional circuit capacity and cleaner distribution. Neutrals and grounds are correctly separated in the subpanel to meet code and reduce nuisance tripping.
- New 4-Wire Feeder: A dedicated 4-conductor feeder (two hots, neutral, and equipment grounding conductor) was installed to the subpanel, ensuring the neutral is isolated and the grounding path is continuous and safe.
- Whole-House Surge Protector: A panel-mounted surge protective device now safeguards appliances and electronics from damaging voltage spikes caused by storms, utility fluctuations, and heavy equipment cycling. This helps extend the lifespan of sensitive devices.
- Grounding System Upgrade: We drove a new ground rod and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) back to the main service panel, enhancing fault clearing and overall system safety.
- Panel Rejuvenation (Back Bedroom): Our tune-up included vacuuming and cleaning the panel interior, re-tensioning lugs and bus connections, verifying neutral/ground separation with one conductor per lug, inspecting and re-sealing any openings to deter moisture, confirming correct service voltage, applying antioxidant where appropriate, and testing AFCI/GFCI protection.
- Complimentary Annual Home Safety Membership (Gold): Enrollment includes checks of smoke/CO detectors, panel safety, code updates, identification of loose or deteriorated connections, and sealing of exposed connectors.
All work was performed with permitting and to current electrical code standards for the Salisbury, NC area.
Why This Upgrade Matters
The new 125A subpanel gives the home room to grow—ideal for future projects like appliance additions, EV charging, or workshop circuits—while keeping the electrical system organized and easy to service. Separating neutrals and grounds via a 4-wire feeder improves safety and helps protective devices operate as intended. The whole-house surge protector adds an essential layer of defense against unpredictable surges, protecting everything from refrigerators and HVAC components to computers and smart home gear. Finally, the grounding upgrade and panel tune-up help ensure lower fault impedance, tighter terminations, and more reliable performance day to day.
