Professional Rooftop AC Service Disconnects and Feeder Wiring in Greenville, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Greenville team, operating from our Taylors branch, completed a code-compliant feeder and disconnect installation for Orchard Hill Construction Co. on April 4, 2025. Lead technician Viktor Opalko oversaw the work, which included running new feeders from recently installed meter bases to six rooftop HVAC units and adding dedicated service disconnects for safe maintenance and future commissioning.
This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Service Disconnects specialties—ideal for property owners and builders needing clean, reliable power distribution to HVAC equipment across Greenville, SC.
Scope of Work
- Installed EMT conduit runs from new meter bases to six rooftop HVAC units, with secure supports, fittings, and terminations.
- Pulled THHN feeders sized for the application to deliver reliable power to each unit location.
- Added six dedicated AC service disconnects at the equipment to meet safety and maintenance requirements.
- Provided overcurrent protection with 70A breakers as specified.
- Verified conductor terminations, grounding, and bonding in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local Greenville standards.
- Labeled circuits and equipment clearly for easy identification by the HVAC team and building staff.
- Per site instruction, left all AC units de-energized (no power connected) pending final HVAC startup and coordination.
All work prioritized safe access, neat conduit routing, and long-term serviceability for future maintenance.
Materials and Methods
- Approximately 300 ft of 1-inch EMT and 50 ft of 1-1/2-inch EMT with the appropriate supports, connectors, and LBs where required.
- About 350 ft of #4 THHN conductors pulled as feeders to rooftop equipment locations.
- Six 70A breakers installed to provide properly sized overcurrent protection.
- Six lockable AC service disconnects installed at the equipment for safe shutoff during maintenance and service.
We followed best practices for rooftop penetrations and transitions, maintained conductor fill and bend radius limits, and protected conductors against abrasion and weather exposure where applicable. The result is a clean, professional installation built for durability and ease of service.
Why Service Disconnects and Feeder Upgrades Matter
- Safety: A local disconnect lets technicians isolate power at the unit, reducing hazards during inspections and repairs.
- Code Compliance: NEC requirements call for an accessible disconnect within sight of HVAC equipment.
- Serviceability: Clearly labeled feeders and shutoffs save time and minimize downtime during maintenance or replacement.
- Future Readiness: Properly sized feeders and quality terminations support reliable operation and future equipment changes.
Project Outcome
The Greenville installation was completed on schedule with neatly routed conduit, labeled disconnects, and verified terminations. In coordination with the general contractor, all AC units were intentionally left off and un-energized for the HVAC team’s final connections and startup procedures. The system is prepared for commissioning and routine service with safe, easy access points.
