Project overview: recessed lighting installation in Denver, NC
Our Charlotte team, operating out of our Matthews branch, completed a clean, code-compliant recessed lighting upgrade for an upstairs living room in Denver, NC. On September 19, 2024, technician Chris Rogers installed five 4-inch recessed can lights and ran new 14/2 NM-B Romex to the switch box as requested by the homeowner, Janelle Smith. Per the scope, we prepared the wiring and connections to the switch box and did not install a switch at this visit.
This project focused on delivering even, comfortable illumination with a modern, low-profile look while keeping the space tidy and the work aligned with current electrical codes.
Scope of work completed
- Five 4-inch can lights installed: We supplied and installed five recessed fixtures to create balanced lighting coverage in the upstairs living room. The fixture install did not include creating a new circuit; wiring additions were handled separately.
- 14/2 NM-B Romex wiring to switch box: Approximately 20 feet of 14/2 Romex was routed for a standard 15-amp lighting application. Cable runs were secured and protected, and connections were terminated at the switch box so the future switch installation will be straightforward.
- Junction box provisions as needed: Where applicable, listed junction boxes were used to maintain accessibility and proper terminations.
- Clean workmanship: We kept the workspace neat and removed debris, leaving the room ready for finishing touches and switch installation at a later date.
Code-compliant wiring and safety
All work was performed to current electrical standards and local code requirements. The 14/2 NM-B cable is appropriate for 15-amp lighting circuits, and all terminations were made in approved enclosures with proper grounding. Our process emphasizes secure fixture mounting, appropriate cable support and protection, and safe, clearly organized connections at the switch box to support a reliable final result once the switch is added.
Benefits of recessed lighting in living rooms
- Even illumination: Multiple can lights help reduce shadows and brighten the entire space.
- Clean, modern look: Low-profile fixtures blend with most interior styles without visual clutter.
- Flexible lighting design: Strategic fixture placement supports reading, TV viewing, and entertaining.
- Future-ready: The setup supports common lamping options, including energy-efficient LED solutions.
