Receptacle and Outlet Installation for an Exercise Room in Charlotte
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a clean, code-compliant outlet installation for an exercise room in Charlotte. On 2026-07-14, technician Will Cruz installed a new standard receptacle to power the homeowner’s fitness equipment, wiring from an existing 15-amp circuit with 14/2 NM-B Romex. The work was completed by our Charlotte branch, based out of the Matthews area, and permitted through the county.
What We Did
- Assessed the exercise room layout and identified a suitable location for a new standard receptacle.
- Verified an available existing 15-amp general-purpose circuit to supply the new outlet.
- Filed and obtained the required electrical permit with the county prior to starting work.
- Performed the necessary sheetrock cut to route cabling and mount the electrical box safely.
- Installed a standard receptacle with cover for convenient access to power.
- Ran approximately 5 ft of 14/2 NM-B Romex from the existing circuit to the new box.
- Completed functionality checks to ensure the new outlet operates as intended.
This project focused on adding a properly placed outlet to serve exercise equipment without running a new circuit, helping the homeowner use the room more effectively while keeping the installation neat and compliant.
Why Wire from an Existing 15-Amp Circuit?
For many general-purpose outlets, an existing 15-amp circuit using 14/2 NM-B is an appropriate, code-aligned solution. It delivers reliable power for typical exercise-room needs while minimizing disruption and cost compared to adding a new breaker and dedicated run. If you plan to add higher-demand equipment in the future, our team can assess loads and recommend whether a new 20-amp or dedicated circuit is warranted.
Permitting, Code, and What’s Included
We secured the required electrical permit for this outlet installation to ensure the work met local code and inspection standards. The scope for this job included:
- County electrical permit filing
- One standard receptacle with cover
- 14/2 NM-B Romex cabling (approx. 5 ft) and any necessary junction box
Exclusions: The permit included for this job is the electrical permit only. Other permits that may be required by specific jurisdictions—such as Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, Builders, or separate subcontractor permits—are not included. If additional non-electrical permits are needed, we’ll inform you of the requirements and can provide pricing for assisting with those filings.
