Outdoor GFCI Outlet Installation in Raleigh, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team helped homeowner Louis Walker gain safe, convenient outdoor power at the front and back of the home. Completed on August 24, 2026 by technicians Ryan Balgobin and Eric Myers, this project added two weather-protected, code-forward GFCI receptacles using new 12/2 wiring, so everyday outdoor tasks are easier and safer.

Following the job, Louis praised our work with a review. You can view it here: See the Google Review.

Project Overview

For this Raleigh home, our electricians extended power from existing interior outlets to two new exterior locations—one at the front and one at the back of the house. Each new receptacle is GFCI-protected and shielded by an in-use “bubble” cover to help guard against rain, sprinkler spray, and humidity while a plug is connected.

Scope of Work

  • 2x GFCI receptacles: Installed outdoor-rated GFCI outlets for enhanced shock protection around moisture.
  • 2x in-use bubble covers: Weatherproof covers that keep the outlet protected whether in use or not.
  • 10 ft of 12/2 NM-B cable: Extended from existing outlets to the new exterior locations; 12-gauge conductors suitable for 20-amp circuits.
  • Tie-in to existing circuit: No new breaker or dedicated circuit was added; wiring was neatly routed and secured with appropriate junctions where required.
  • Testing and verification: GFCI trip/reset, polarity, and function tests performed to confirm reliable operation.

Why GFCI and In-Use Covers Matter Outdoors

Outdoor outlets face moisture, temperature swings, and debris—conditions that increase shock and corrosion risks. GFCI protection adds a vital safety layer by monitoring for ground faults and shutting off power rapidly if one occurs. In-use bubble covers seal the receptacle while a cord is plugged in, helping prevent water intrusion that can cause nuisance tripping or equipment damage.

Together, these components provide a safer and more reliable way to power lawn equipment, pressure washers, string lights, and seasonal decor around your Raleigh property.

Our Raleigh Installation Process

  • Assessment: Identified the best existing outlet locations to extend power to the front and back of the home.
  • Wiring: Ran approximately 10 feet of 12/2 NM-B cable to serve the new outdoor receptacles, using proper junctions and secure routing.
  • Device install: Mounted outdoor-rated GFCI receptacles and fitted in-use bubble covers for ongoing weather protection.
  • Quality checks: Verified correct wiring, GFCI functionality, and reliable operation under load; labeled and cleaned the work area.

The result is dependable, convenient access to power at both the front and rear of the home—without running extension cords through doorways or relying on indoor outlets.

Signs You Could Benefit from Outdoor Outlet Upgrades

  • Using long extension cords for yard tools or patio lighting
  • Existing outdoor outlets without GFCI protection
  • Cracked or missing weather covers
  • Frequent tripping when it rains or when sprinklers run
  • New outdoor living areas that need safe, convenient power
