Project overview

Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical upgrade for Leslie Johnson in Raleigh, NC on January 21, 2026. Led by technician Cody Perry, this project included a 200-amp outdoor main panel replacement with a 20-year transferable warranty, a new 100-amp indoor subpanel, whole-home surge protection, and lighting updates. All work was permitted, inspected, and backed by our lifetime craftsmanship warranty.

What we upgraded

  • Main service panel — 200A outdoor (aluminum bus): We brought the service equipment up to current electrical code, replaced the panel and main lug, labeled all circuits, properly grounded and bonded the enclosure, and reconnected the service entrance cable and existing branch circuits. This panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty and the project included permitting and inspection.
  • Whole-home surge protection: A surge protection device was installed at the main service to help reduce damage from voltage spikes. The device carries a 3-year warranty and a $10k warranty as specified.
  • Indoor 100A subpanel: We installed a new 100-amp subpanel fed with THHN #4 conductors and protected by a 2-pole 100A breaker. Circuits were organized to support major loads and general branch circuits.
  • Lighting updates: Select fixtures were replaced to refresh lighting and align with current standards.

During the panel change, power was temporarily disconnected. To minimize downtime, a generator was made available for limited power usage during the outage.

Installed components at a glance

  • 200A outdoor panel with aluminum bus, new labeling, grounding, and bonding
  • THHN #4 feeder conductors to supply the 100A subpanel
  • Breakers installed or replaced as appropriate: 1× 100A 2-pole (subpanel), 2× 50A standard, 1× 40A standard, 5× 30A double pole, 17× 20A standard, 15× 15A standard, 1× 15A GFCI/AFCI combo (kitchen receptacles)
  • Surge protection device (3-year warranty; $10k warranty)

Code and safety details

Bringing the system current included proper grounding and bonding, updated circuit identification, and service reconnections in line with code. As inspectors implement NEC 2020 in Raleigh, AFCI protection may be required on certain circuits. Installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting issues—such as shared neutrals—that can cause immediate tripping and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our team advised the homeowner on these possibilities during the upgrade.

Results for this Raleigh home

The upgraded service equipment improves safety, reliability, and available capacity for today’s household demands. With the new 200A main panel, organized subpanel distribution, and whole-home surge protection, the electrical system is better prepared for large appliances and everyday electronics. This project is covered by the panel’s 20-year transferable warranty and our lifetime craftsmanship warranty.
