Raleigh Project Overview: Circuit Breaker, GFCI, and 3‑Way Switch Replacement
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a safety-focused service visit for OLIVER DALE in Raleigh, NC. On July 12, 2024, our technician, Patrick Burke, corrected a double‑tapped circuit by installing tandem breakers, replaced an upstairs bathroom GFCI outlet, and swapped out a pair of 3‑way light switches serving a stairwell. This job fits our core services in Panels & Service Upgrades and Circuit Breaker Repair & Replacement.
These targeted repairs addressed nuisance issues and potential safety concerns common in residential electrical systems—especially where older panels, bathroom receptacles, and multi‑location stairway lighting controls come together.
What We Did
- Installed 3x 15A Tandem Breakers: We corrected a double‑tapped condition by separating conductors onto properly sized 15‑amp tandem breakers. This created dedicated breaker spaces for bathroom lighting and standard brand circuits, noted as “Bathroom lights (2020 code as well) and standard brand circuits.”
- Replaced 1x GFCI Receptacle (Upstairs Bathroom): We installed a new GFCI outlet with cover. This modern protective device reduces the risk of shock in wet areas and provides a clear test/reset function for the homeowner.
- Replaced 2x Standard 3‑Way Switches (Stairwell): We swapped the controls at the downstairs and upstairs switch locations serving the stairwell lighting, restoring smooth, reliable on/off control from both ends of the stairs.
All work focused on safe operation and clear labeling, helping ensure the panel and affected branch circuits are organized and easier to maintain in the future.
Why This Work Matters
Double‑tapped breakers happen when two conductors share a breaker terminal that’s designed for a single conductor. This can lead to loose terminations, overheating, or unpredictable tripping. By moving those conductors to properly rated tandem breakers, we provided dedicated spaces and a more dependable wiring arrangement inside the panel.
In a bathroom, a GFCI outlet is a critical layer of protection. It continually monitors the electrical current and quickly interrupts power if an imbalance is detected, which helps reduce shock risks around sinks and moisture. A new, clearly labeled GFCI makes testing and reset straightforward for everyday use.
For stairways, 3‑way switches allow control of the same light from two locations. When they wear out, homeowners can experience flickering, intermittent control, or lights that won’t respond from one end. Replacing both devices restores consistent functionality and better everyday convenience.
