Project overview: 200A meter/main upgrade in Raleigh, NC

Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical service upgrade for homeowner Richard Jenkins on August 27, 2025. Led by technician Jared Mata, the project replaced the existing meter/main with a modern 200-amp over/under meter/panel combo, added a whole-home surge protection system, and installed new dedicated circuits to power a pool heater, outlets, and a ceiling fan in the pool house.

From permits to utility coordination, we handled the details so the homeowner could enjoy safer, more reliable power. After the project, the customer praised our Raleigh team with a positive review.

Work completed on this Raleigh home

  • Pulled the required electrical permit with the local authority.
  • Installed a 200A meter/main combo (over/under, feed-through lugs) with an aluminum bus bar and a 20-year transferable warranty from the manufacturer.
  • Added a whole-home surge protection device featuring a connected-equipment warranty of $10K for 3 years.
  • Upgraded grounding with new ground rods and grounding electrode conductor properly bonded to the service.
  • Ran a new 50-amp GFCI-protected circuit with 6/3 NM-B for the pool heater.
  • Installed a new 20-amp branch circuit (12/2 NM-B) to feed three outlets in the pool house: one GFCI receptacle plus two standard receptacles.
  • Added a dedicated 15-amp lighting circuit (14/2 NM-B) with switching, plus a customer-supplied ceiling fan installation.
  • Completed approximately 18–24 inches deep trenching with PVC conduit (3/4 inch and 2 inch) for safe, code-compliant routing.

Surge protection and code-forward safety

Raleigh’s frequent summer storms and utility fluctuations make sensitive electronics vulnerable. The installed whole-home surge protector helps shield major appliances, HVAC equipment, and devices at the panel—so surges are stopped before they spread through the home. For pool equipment, we included GFCI protection and followed current NEC requirements to enhance safety in damp and outdoor environments.

As inspectors continue adopting NEC 2020 updates, our team stays ahead of code changes—selecting the right protective devices and installing them to manufacturer and local standards.

Pool heater and pool house circuits

To support the new pool heater, we installed a 50A GFCI breaker and ran a 240V feeder using 6/3 NM-B. In the pool house, we added a 20A circuit for convenience outlets—one GFCI plus two standard receptacles—along with a dedicated lighting circuit, two switches, and a ceiling fan. Where required, wiring was routed in PVC conduit and placed in a properly trenched path for durability and compliance.

Permits, inspections, and utility coordination

Touchstone Electric managed the electrical permit and coordinated the utility power drop needed for the meter/main change-out. Our process reduces downtime, protects your home, and keeps your project moving smoothly through inspection. Note: if a project requires non-electrical permits (such as historic preservation, zoning, or environmental), those are separate from the electrical permit and handled on a case-by-case basis.

Grounding and panel craftsmanship

Reliable grounding is essential for modern service equipment. We drove new ground rods, installed the grounding electrode conductor, and made secure, code-compliant terminations at the new meter/main. Inside the panel, breakers were landed cleanly with torque-verified terminations to help minimize heat and ensure long-term reliability.
