Project Overview

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a full 200A meter/main panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for homeowner Carl Mayes in Raleigh, NC. Led by technician Francisco Martinez and finished on March 12, 2026, this permitted, utility-coordinated service upgrade brings the home’s electrical system up to current code, expands capacity for modern loads, and adds robust surge defense.

Every installation is backed by our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty, with additional manufacturer coverage noted below for select components.

What We Installed

  • 200A Meter/Panel Combo (over/under with feed-through lugs): New meter/main combo installed with grounding electrode conductors and ground rods. Our team scheduled the power drop with the utility and handled permitting and inspection.
  • 200A Main Panel (aluminum bus): Panel modernization to current code, including grounding and bonding, clear circuit labeling, and reconnection of existing circuits. The aluminum bus and panel carry a 20-year transferrable warranty from the manufacturer.
  • Whole-Home Surge Protection: A system with $10,000 coverage and a 3-year warranty to protect sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes and lightning-related surges.
  • Breakers Installed:
    • 1 × 50A standard breaker (range, heater/furnace, subpanel, or EV charger)
    • 1 × 40A standard breaker (dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, or EV charger)
    • 1 × 30A double-pole standard breaker
    • 4 × 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
    • 13 × 15A standard breakers for lighting (including bathrooms per 2020 code) and general branch circuits
  • Feeder and Conduit: 35 ft of SER #2 (4‑wire) feeder from the main panel to the subpanel and 2" PVC conduit (with fittings, LBs, and connectors) for a neat and durable installation.
  • Outdoor Circuits Extended: Five tailored tasks to extend and optimize exterior circuits for present needs and future outdoor upgrades.

Why a 200A Service Upgrade in Raleigh?

  • Capacity for today’s loads: EV charging, upgraded HVAC, hot tubs, and modern kitchen appliances demand more available amperage.
  • Safety and reliability: New equipment and correct grounding/bonding reduce nuisance trips and overheating risks.
  • Surge protection: Whole-home protection adds a critical layer against damaging spikes that plug-in strips can’t match.
  • Future-ready: Feed-through lugs and a dedicated subpanel feeder make future expansions simpler and cleaner.

Permits, Code, and Inspection

Our Raleigh branch pulled the required permits and coordinated inspection to deliver a code-compliant, documented upgrade. As NEC 2020 adoption continues across the region, inspectors may require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. In some homes, preexisting conditions like shared neutrals can cause immediate tripping and may require diagnostic time to correct—our team explains options and next steps if those conditions are discovered.

During utility shutdowns, we can provide a generator for limited power usage upon request to help minimize downtime while we complete the work.
