Raleigh 200A Electrical Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive 200-amp electrical service upgrade for homeowner Carol-Ann Smith in Raleigh, NC. Led by technician Brad Williams, this project replaced the aging main electrical panel, added whole-home surge protection, and modernized the meter base and service riser—all brought up to current code with permitting and inspection.
Completion date: October 2025
What we installed
- 200A Main Electrical Panel Replacement: New indoor 200-amp panel with an aluminum bus and a 20-year transferable panel warranty. We grounded and bonded the panel, relabeled circuits, reconnected the service-entrance conductors, and ensured a clean, organized layout for easier future service.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: A service-rated SPD installed at the main panel to divert harmful voltage spikes to ground. This unit includes a $50,000 coverage, 10-year warranty for covered appliances in the unlikely event of device failure.
- Meter Base and Riser Upgrade: New 200-amp meter base with utility coordination for the power drop, plus new ground rods and grounding electrode conductors. We also installed a new riser with weatherhead, IMC conduit, straps, roof boot, and service-entrance cable to complete the service entrance refresh.
- Service Conductors and Breakers: New 2/0 THHN conductors appropriate for 200A service, along with a code-compliant mix of breakers sized for typical home loads:
- 1 × 50A standard (range, furnace/heat, EV-ready)
- 1 × 30A double-pole (dryer, water heater, A/C condenser)
- 5 × 20A standard (small-appliance/general circuits)
- 3 × 15A AFCI (living areas/bedrooms/dining lighting as required)
- 1 × 15A double-pole
- 1 × 25A double-pole (mini-split, well pump, small condenser)
Code and safety upgrades
As Raleigh and surrounding jurisdictions continue adopting recent NEC code cycles, added protections like AFCI and surge protection have become increasingly important. This project included AFCI protection on select 15A circuits to meet current requirements and enhance safety.
Note: When AFCI breakers are installed, they can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may require diagnostic work to resolve nuisance tripping. Our Raleigh team is experienced in tracing and correcting these issues when they arise.
For surge protection coverage, claims are secondary to the homeowner’s insurance, with direct lightning strikes excluded. Covered equipment typically includes major appliances and hardwired systems (e.g., HVAC, ranges, lighting), while security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
Permitting, inspection, and outage coordination
Touchstone Electric pulled the required permits and coordinated the inspection for this upgrade. We also scheduled the utility power drop for meter work and managed a brief outage to safely complete the changeover. If a homeowner needs limited power during an outage window, our team can make a generator available upon request.
Warranties and peace of mind
- Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty on our workmanship
- 20-year transferable warranty on the new aluminum-bus main panel
- $50,000 / 10-year surge protection coverage for covered equipment
Together, these protections deliver long-term value, safety, and reliability for Raleigh homeowners investing in a 200A panel upgrade.
