Project overview: 200A panel upgrade and surge protection in Raleigh, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Adrienne Cole, bringing the main service to 200 amps and adding whole-home surge protection. Led by technician Cody Perry, the project was finished on January 7, 2025, and included permitting, inspection coordination, and our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty.
This upgrade provides safer, more reliable power capacity while protecting sensitive electronics and appliances from damaging voltage spikes common during storms and utility fluctuations in the Raleigh area.
What we installed
- Permit pulled and inspection handled: We secured the required permit and coordinated final inspection for a code-compliant installation.
- Main panel replacement – 200A (aluminum bus): The new indoor panel was grounded and bonded, service conductors and existing circuits were reconnected, and clear circuit labeling was provided. The panel carries a 20-year transferable manufacturer warranty.
- Whole-home surge protector: Installed at the main panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground. Includes a $50,000 appliance protection warranty for 10 years in the unlikely event of device failure.
- Breaker replacements for reliability and code alignment:
- 5 × 15A standard breakers (lighting and standard branch circuits)
- 15 × 20A standard breakers (small appliance circuits)
- 3 × 30A double-pole breakers, with one configured as a 35A double-pole (for larger loads such as dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, or EV charger)
- 1 × 15A double-pole breaker
- Skilled crew support: An electrical apprentice assisted to ensure an efficient, high-quality installation.
- Planned power outage: During the panel changeout, a company generator was available for limited temporary power to keep essentials running.
Code, permitting, and inspection
As local inspectors increasingly apply NEC 2020 standards, certain circuits may require AFCI protection. If the inspector calls for AFCI upgrades, our Raleigh team discusses options with the homeowner and can diagnose any underlying wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that might cause nuisance tripping. We aim to make every step—from permit to final sign-off—smooth and transparent.
