Porch Ceiling Fan and Outdoor Outlets in Mountain Home, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Lighting & Ceiling Fans team completed a clean, code-focused outdoor upgrade for Sexton Deck Builders in Mountain Home, NC. Led by technician Aaron Smith, this project was finished on May 5, 2026 and coordinated through our Hendersonville branch serving the greater Asheville area.

The goal: improve comfort and convenience on a new back porch with a ceiling fan, in-use weatherproof outlets, and a safe, GFCI-protected circuit—installed with neat routing, proper supports, and weather-ready materials.

What We Installed

  • Fan-rated ceiling box and fan install: We centered a fan-rated box on the new porch ceiling and installed the customer-supplied ceiling fan for reliable support and smooth operation.
  • Added interior switch control: We extended the existing switch box and fished a new switch leg to provide a dedicated, standard on/off control for the porch fan.
  • Two outdoor receptacles with bubble covers: We added two weather-resistant outlets on the back porch, each protected by an in-use (bubble) cover to keep plugs safe from rain and moisture.
  • GFCI protection at the panel: A new 20A GFCI breaker provides fast-acting protection for the outdoor circuit, helping to reduce shock risk in damp locations.
  • Clean wiring and protected pathways: We utilized existing access in the crawlspace, fished wiring where needed, and routed exposed sections in liquid-tight flexible conduit for durability and a tidy finish.

Materials and Methods Used

  • 65 ft of 12/2 NM-B Romex for the 20A receptacle circuit, supported and terminated to manufacturer and code guidelines.
  • 25 ft of 14/2 NM-B Romex for the lighting/fan circuit to keep loads correctly separated.
  • 25 ft of 3/4-inch liquid-tight/flex conduit with fittings and supports to protect exterior runs and transitions.
  • 2 standard receptacles paired with 2 bubble covers for in-use weatherproofing.
  • 1 standard switch for fan control and a 20A GFCI breaker installed at the service panel.
  • Fishing wire to pull new conductors through finished sections with minimal disturbance.

The final layout keeps high-current receptacles on a GFCI-protected 20A circuit, while the fan/light control is on a dedicated lighting run—an arrangement that supports performance and safety outdoors.

Why GFCI and Weatherproofing Matter Outdoors

Exterior spaces are exposed to rain, humidity, and temperature swings. Using a GFCI-protected circuit for outdoor receptacles helps reduce shock hazards, and in-use bubble covers protect connections even when something is plugged in. Liquid-tight conduit guards conductors from moisture and sun, and a fan-rated box ensures the ceiling fan remains secure over years of use.

Clean, Code-Focused Craftsmanship

From the crawlspace routing to the switch extension and fan mounting, our team delivered tidy, well-supported wiring with attention to detail. Aaron verified proper terminations, torque, and device function, then labeled and tested the new circuits for a worry-free handoff.

Who We Served

This project was completed for Sexton Deck Builders as part of a porch finishing scope. After completion, the customer shared positive feedback about the smooth scheduling, clear communication, and the neat, professional result.
