Project overview in Indian Trail, NC

On October 15, 2024, the Touchstone Electric Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a comprehensive pool electrical project for homeowner Lambros Papazis in Indian Trail, NC. Our licensed technicians, Gump Martin, Theo Coetsee, and Ben Lively, handled the full scope of pool wiring, bonding, and equipment hookups. Per the project plan, trenching and conduit installation were provided by the customer; our crew coordinated closely to pull conductors, terminate equipment, and deliver a clean, code-compliant finish.

What we installed

  • Equipotential bonding halo: Established a continuous bonding ring around the pool and connected it to the pool equipment’s ground lug, bonding all required metallic components for safety and code compliance.
  • Outdoor 60A subpanel: Installed an exterior-rated 60-amp subpanel dedicated to pool systems. The scope included permitting, a feeder breaker from the main panel, a 20A two-pole breaker for the pump, and a breaker for pool lighting.
  • Pool lighting integration (3 fixtures): Connected three pool light fixtures with whips, using a customer-provided transformer. We pulled the THHN ground conductor through the conduit to each fixture for proper grounding.
  • Low-voltage transformer setup: Integrated the transformer to step down voltage for the pool lights in accordance with manufacturer specifications and pool electrical codes.
  • Equipment hookups: Landed power from the pool control panel to each piece of pool equipment. Connections included control wiring and low-voltage relays as required by the manufacturer diagrams.
  • Feeder conductors: Pulled approximately 125 feet of #6 THHN conductors for the 60A circuits, coordinating with the customer’s conduit routing.
  • GFCI-protected convenience receptacle: Installed a dedicated 120V circuit with GFCI protection to meet the requirement for an outlet within the specified distance of the water’s edge.

Built for safety and code compliance

Pool environments demand strict adherence to electrical codes. Our team implemented an NEC-compliant equipotential bonding system to minimize voltage differences around the pool area, used GFCI protection where required, and followed wet-location wiring practices, including proper fittings and in-use covers. The new subpanel was labeled clearly, and terminations were torqued to manufacturer specifications. We also included permitting for the subpanel and coordinated the installation with inspection-ready documentation.

Because the customer handled trenching and conduit, we verified conduit size, depth expectations, and routing before pulling conductors. This ensured that clearances, pull lengths, and device locations met both the plan and code requirements.

Materials and methods you can trust

  • THHN #6 copper conductors for reliable 60A feeder performance.
  • Copper bonding wire and listed bonding lugs to create a durable, corrosion-resistant bonding halo.
  • Outdoor-rated subpanel and enclosures for longevity in the pool equipment area.
  • Manufacturer-driven terminations at the control panel, pump, lights, transformer, and relays for safe operation.

The result is a neat, serviceable installation that supports present needs and provides a solid foundation for future pool system upgrades.
