Pool Heater Circuit Upgrade & 50A GFCI in Greenwood, SC

Touchstone Electric’s Greenville team, based out of our Taylors branch, completed a specialty Pool & Hot Tub Electrical upgrade for Glenda Streevy in Greenwood. The home’s new pool heater required a 50-amp supply, but the existing circuit was only 30 amps—causing the 30A GFI breaker to nuisance-trip. Our licensed technicians, Johann Fischer and Tyler Harris, upgraded the circuit, installed a 50A GFCI breaker, and ran new conductors to deliver reliable, code-compliant power around water.

Date completed: July 29, 2026

What We Did

  • Diagnosed the cause of tripping: Confirmed the new pool heater’s 50A load exceeded the existing 30A circuit capacity, leading to repeated breaker trips.
  • Installed a 50A GFCI breaker: Upgraded protection at the panel to meet safety requirements for equipment near pools.
  • Ran new 6/2 wiring: Installed approximately 50 feet of NM-B 6/2 cable and additional #6 THHN conductors as needed to complete the feeder path with proper ampacity.
  • Connected the customer-supplied heater: Performed the final appliance connection and verified correct operation.
  • Team support: An electrical assistant was onsite to ensure an efficient, clean, and timely installation.
  • Safety testing and verification: Conducted GFCI trip-test, torque checks, and load/voltage verification to confirm dependable performance.

The result is a dedicated 50-amp circuit that matches the heater’s specifications and includes GFCI protection for enhanced safety around the pool area.

Why This Upgrade Matters for Pool and Spa Equipment

  • Correct ampacity: Equipment that draws more current than a circuit can supply will trip breakers and can stress electrical components. A 50A circuit resolves this.
  • GFCI protection near water: Ground-fault protection is essential around pools and spas to reduce shock risk.
  • Reliability and performance: Properly sized wiring and overcurrent protection help your heater start up smoothly and run consistently during the season.
  • Code-conscious workmanship: Routing, terminations, and protection are completed with current electrical code in mind for long-term safety.

Signs You May Need a Pool or Hot Tub Electrical Upgrade

  • Frequent tripping on a GFI/GFCI breaker when the heater or spa starts
  • New equipment with a higher amp rating than the existing circuit
  • Warm or buzzing breakers, or dimming lights when the unit engages
  • Older wiring that doesn’t match the manufacturer’s specifications

If you’re in Greenwood and experiencing any of these issues, Touchstone Electric can assess your system and recommend a safe, right-sized solution.
